About this listen
Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist, business consultant, and coach, author Mark Goulston combines his background with the latest scientific research to help listeners turn the "impossible" and "unreachable" people in their lives into allies, devoted customers, loyal colleagues, and lifetime friends. Just Listen provides simple but powerful techniques listeners can use to really get through to people.
You'll learn how to: make a powerful and positive first impression; listen effectively; make even a total stranger (potential client) feel understood; talk an angry or aggressive person away from an instinctual, unproductive reaction and toward a more rational mindset; and achieve buy-in - the linchpin of all persuasion, negotiation, and sales.
Whether they're coworkers, friends, strangers, or enemies, the first make-or-break step in persuading anyone to do anything is getting them to hear you out. With this groundbreaking audiobook, listeners will be able to master the fine but critical art of effective communication.

Today, most of us communicate from behind electronic screens, and studies show that Americans feel less connected and more divided than ever before. The blame for some of this disconnect can be attributed to our political landscape, but the erosion of our conversational skills as a society lies with us as individuals. And the only way forward, says Headlee, is to start talking to each other. In We Need to Talk, she outlines the strategies that have made her a better conversationalist - and offers simple tools that can improve anyone's communication.

Story
At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation. On social media, we shape our personal narratives. At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians. We’re not listening. And no one is listening to us. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.

Let's face it: We all know people who are irrational. No matter how hard you try to reason with them, it never works. So what's the solution? How do you talk to someone who's out of control? What can you do with a boss who bullies, a spouse who yells, or a friend who frequently bursts into tears? In his book Just Listen, Mark Goulston shared his best-selling formula for getting through to the resistant people in your life. Now he brings his communication magic to the most difficult group of all - the downright irrational.

How many times have you caught yourself lying in bed, watching TV, scrolling your phone, or just chilling and doing nothing? Trust me. I know how it feels like. Often, it looks like you want to do something, but your body just doesn’t respond, and at the end of the day, you start your mental self-destruction process because you haven’t done anything productive - and that is the first stage of super-laziness most people have to overcome.

Story
Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

Great Applied EQ
I can tell that the author practices EQ in his life & uses it to help others, I find this to be admirable and a great example of how to apply the principles in practical everyday ways. Didn’t have the chance to learn EQ in learning institutions and now that I have found the importance of it I believe this book is a rudimentary step in that process.

Insightful with a Bit of Humor
I thought this book might be a little dry and after reading the summary wasn’t sure I wanted to read it for improvement at work. I gave it a chance and was glad to find it incredibly insightful for work and personal life. Having thought of myself as a good listener, I realized that to not be the case. The book was written in short chapters that allowed me to quickly work on applying lessons learned before completing. I look forward to seeing the evolution of my listening skills with further application of what I have heard. As a new parent I also flagged some sections to come back to, as I am sure I will be dealing with how to communicate with a teenager soon enough.

Great ideas
This is probably the first book I’ve listened to of this type- where the main focus is to get better at communicating with others. Whereas a fair amount of the examples he gives don’t apply to me or my daily situations, there were a some that did and I’m thankful to have gained that information from this audiobook.

Now beginning my second read
This book has so many valuable ideas and approaches that I am just now beginning to listen to this audiobook a second time. Anyone who applies what Dr. Gould lays out cannot help but improve their lives. I have already used some of his techniques on my adult daughter, and it certainly makes us both feel more “felt” and listened to.

Just listen to positively improve relationships!
I learned a lot of helpful things to lovingly work with a difficult child. There are many chapters that discuss sales & business techniques, but I still gleaned knowledge from those in working within relationships in general! We can all do better in our listening! Dr. Goulston has an incredible gift!

A surprisingly helpful and practical (“business self help”) book
As a 56 year old Physician Assistant with 25 years of experience, I’ve recently opened a self pay General medical practice. Listening on Audible for the 3rd time is even more enjoyable than the first time. I rank the information and quality of this book up with the classics such as “Seven Habits of Effective People” Nice job Dr. Goulston!! Arthur Murray’s soft spoken manner of narration increases listening to the book.

Well done
I really enjoyed this (kind of to my surprise). Unlike others like it, its so practical and useful. Dr G provides “how to”s that could come across as manipulative and redeems them with a healthy dose of warmth and wisdom

You need to “listen”
This was a great listen about…..listening. Calming your impulses and understanding why people behave in a certain manner will help improve communication professionally and personally. Some of the tips in the book, I am sure everyone uses from time to time but if you incorporate all of the tips, I am sure that you will have more productive communications.
