Led by Hanno and Ira Hath, 32 mostly Manth survivors of the fall of the Mastery search for the fabled Homeland. Ira knows that as long as she feels the warmth on her face, despite the wintry conditions, they are heading in the right direction. Alice Dickinson, a young advertising executive in London, decides to take time off work to research her idea for a screenplay: the true story of the scandalous, adulterous love affair that took place between a young, Amherst college faculty wife, Mabel Loomis Todd, and the college's treasurer, Austin Dickinson, in the 1880s. Austin, twenty-four years Mabel's senior and married, was the brother of the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson, whose house provided the setting for Austin and Mabel's trysts.

Five years have passed. The city of Aramanth has become kinder - weaker. When the ruthless soldiers of the Mastery strike, the city is burned, and the Manth people are taken into slavery. Kestrel Hath is left behind, separated from her beloved brother, Bowman, and vowing revenge. Now Kestrel must find Bowman again, and Bowman must learn the secrets of the Singer people. Only then will they break the power of the Mastery.

She falls instantly in love with Ed, who falls in love with her. So does Larry. Both men go off to war, and Ed wins the highest military honor for his bravery. But sometimes heroes don’t make the best husbands. Motherland follows Kitty, Ed, and Larry from wartime England and the brutally tragic Dieppe raid to Nazi-occupied France, India after the war, and Jamaica before independence.

The sacrifice of Christ is where the redemption story of true believers begins. Nicholson reflects on the sacrifice of the God made flesh and its significance for the religious community. He refers to the intrinsic design of the sacrifice which blessed us all with a life of righteousness.

We tend to leave a will to divide goods and possessions, but Christ left a will as well. William Nicholson explains to us the nature of Christ’s will. He states how this will is a gracious one and will be constituted once we accept the life and teachings of Christ.

18th century Puritan preacher William Nicholson shares his view on the triumphs and glory of the church. There is only one real church, which is the church of purity and perfection in heaven. But to reach this divine church, the temporal one was built here on Earth as a practice and reminder of our ultimate goal and future glory.

Where the body has its own healer in doctor, we also need one for our soul. The teachings and sacrifice of Christ can often serve as a spiritual balm but full acceptance of his divinity can serve a far greater purpose. William Nicholson explains how only the deeply religious can recognize their own spiritual disease and accept Christ as a physician of the soul.

Death is a rather sinister and taboo topic but for Christians, it is one of relief. The Bible teaches us all how to die, and William Nicholson stresses the importance of life as a preparation. In order to gain the glory promised after death, Christ must always be present before it and be a prevailing force in our lives.

Where we all face difficulties in our lives, it is our view on life which defines how we approach it. William Nicholson points out that the religious are guaranteed the greatest comfort of all. With every difficulty a Christian faces, they will feel the presence and comfort of God.

Christianity is, in a sense, the great equalizer giving endless chances to the pious and sinner both. And even though it may not seem that way, Judgement day takes equality to the next level. William Nicholson expands on the great work a mortal life entails and how only our actions will determine how eternity will be spent.

The story is the illicit love affair between Austin Dickinson and Mabel Todd.
