A Most Anticipated Book of 2025: Goodreads • USA TODAY Marie Claire BookPage Literary Lifestyle Book Riot Sunset Magazine Totally Booked with Zibby Owens

#1 New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman returns with an unforgettably funny, deeply moving tale of four teenagers whose friendship creates a bond so powerful that it changes a complete stranger’s life twenty-five years later.

Most people don’t even notice them—three tiny figures sitting at the end of a long pier in the corner of one of the most famous paintings in the world. Most people think it’s just a depiction of the sea. But Louisa, an aspiring artist herself, knows otherwise, and she is determined to find out the story of these three enigmatic figures.

Twenty-five years earlier, in a distant seaside town, a group of teenagers find refuge from their bruising home lives by spending long summer days on an abandoned pier, telling silly jokes, sharing secrets, and committing small acts of rebellion. These lost souls find in each other a reason to get up each morning, a reason to dream, a reason to love.

Out of that summer emerges a transcendent work of art, a painting that will unexpectedly be placed into eighteen-year-old Louisa’s care. She embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn how the painting came to be and to decide what to do with it. The closer she gets to the painting’s birthplace, the more nervous she becomes about what she’ll find. Louisa is proof that happy endings don’t always take the form we expect in this stunning testament to the transformative, timeless power of friendship and art.

Editorial Review

Uncontrollable tears and laughter at the same time
Sometimes the bonds we make when we’re young stay with us for a lifetime. In My Friends, Fredrik Backman weaves a dual-timeline narrative centered on a group of four teenagers: Joar, Ted, Ali, and a boy simply known as “the artist.” Twenty-five years ago, they found escape and comfort in one another during long days on a forgotten pier in a quiet seaside town. In pure Backman form, the messy parts of being human are front and center—simultaneously ugly and beautiful and so true to life. He explores the meaning and impact of art, how it can connect us as well as change us. Those days on the pier are captured in a painting—one that would go on to become a masterpiece and, unexpectedly, change the life of a girl named Louisa decades later. I could listen to narrator Marin Ireland’s retelling of the old stories and Louisa’s new adventures on an endless loop! As always, Backman has left me wrecked and rebuilt in the course of one novel.—Tricia F., Audible Editor

Every other sentence is profound, filled with such joy, sorrow, and hope. The human experience is depicted nowhere, and with such deprh, as in the sentences/stories that Fredrick Backman writes. Marin Ireland is the perfect voice to those words, adding depth and empathy to them. I read all the Backman I can, and this proves he is no less a master than he was with A Man Called Ove.

Magnificent

This surpassed a 5 star read…..it’s one of those books that I will forever think about. I loved living in My Friends world for a short period of time. My heart aches but it also feels full, it’s amazing how Fredrik Backman can make you feel two very different emotions so intensely and at the same time.

BEAUTIFUL

I first got into Backman’s writing with A Man Called Ove. I fell in love and have never gone back. It’s time for me to do another read through of all his works again.

A pivotal reminder as to why I love Backman so much

I’m a huge fan but have to admit last couple of books didn’t interest me. HOWEVER, this book has to be one of his absolute best novels yet. The writing, the wit, the characters, the story. It has your heart filled with smiles, tears and your inner being touched by kindness, grace and the reality of life. Sometimes we never want to see what is in front of us until we have to, this book reminds you of your importance in the world and how to never lose sight of those relationships who made you who you are.

Memorable
