About this listen

For thousands of years, the Darkness has chosen its champions—granting power, feeding ambition, and demanding sacrifice to those it favored.

The Vampire Paul is not this champion. He is, however, cunning and patient.

Ryet, cursed by his demonic transformation, is bound by blood to Syrsee, a witch whose very existence fuels his hunger and his torment. Each drop of her blood brings him closer to becoming the monster he fears, even as their connection grows intoxicatingly intimate. Is it love between them? Or just an addiction?

Paul, the creator, sees Ryet as his masterpiece, the key to his salvation—and his undoing. Driven by ambition and the promise of a legacy, Paul will stop at nothing to see his vision realized, even as it fractures the fragile bonds of love and loyalty he’s earned with Ryet.

But it is Josep, favored and chosen by the Darkness itself, who holds the true power. As he wields his gifts to shape the future, his arrogance blinds him to forces conspiring for control.

In a world of blood and magic, where power corrupts and love ensnares, the Darkness always demands more—and the battle for eternity is only beginning.

UTTER CRAZINESS

Wow. I'm not even sure where to start with this review other than to say BOY DID THIS TAKE A DARK TURN. We really get to see the face of real evil and while I was expecting some of that to a certain degree after the first book, it definitely went way over the top on those expectations. Now, that is not necessarily a bad thing, it just was.....

The other thing that I really had a hard time was with the fact that everything is so very confusing. I finished this book and was just...well, lost. I felt like I knew less after finishing this book than I did after finishing the first book - and after the amount of information that we are given in this book - HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THAT BE?

I have so many questions and feel like everything was just flying right over my head. I'm so confused. I even stopped the audio and got the print version so that I could READ the information being given out. And boy oh boy, there were so many paragraphs that I had to read several times (and VERY slowly) because I had NO CLUE what the heck was going on. Everyone is betraying everyone. Paul and Jacob have plans upon plans and it becomes apparent that the information we were given in the beginning of this story - well, you can just throw everything out and know that most of that information was meant to mislead. Mislead who? EVERYONE.

Yes, there is a lot of information FINALLY being - but unfortunately, the way the information is being given out - sometimes in HUGE info dumps - but this new information does not make the reader feel good - like in a, "Aha, so THAT'S why this happened!"

Nope. It's more like, "What the heck? What in the world does that even mean?"

Can you feel my frustration? I hope so because that was the feeling that was the biggest emotion when I finished the last page.

Now, with all of that being said - this is still a very compelling book. It was EXTREMELY easy to fall down the rabbit hole and become immediately invested as we follow along with the S***SHOW that is going on with our FMC Syrsee and our good guy MMC Ryet. Boy oh boy they are in a world of craziness that neither understands nor knows how to proceed... That's the problem - they both realize that through some expert manipulation, they seem to have walked into this worse case scenario on their own - like lambs to the slaughter. Without going into spoilers, lets just say that we are learning that they honestly never had a chance. Things were planned hundreds of years ago and Paul is an expert manipulator. This is his complete plan and it is unfolding in every single way that he intended. Right now, it is easy to extremely dislike both Paul and Jacob. (the whole "Little Baby" thing....just...ick. Ick, ick, ick)

But, I'm going to stop there because I'm repeating myself. Obviously, Ms. Huss was able to write her story in a way that even though I am frustrated and lost - I NEED to find out what is going to happen. This book made me feel such strong emotions and feel even stronger as I root for these two crazy kids who are in a world of hurt. I am TOTALLY on the sides of Syrsee and Ryet and all I can say is they BETTER get some kind of HEA. How in the world that is going to happen, I have no clue - but it BETTER happen - okay, okay I'll stop- See...this is how invested I am.

So- now the wait begins for book 3. I have to wait until May (UGH!!) and it is now only April 2nd (another UGH) but wait I will.

This review is all over the place- but so are my emotions - so maybe that is an accurate representation of my feelings of this story. At this point, honestly....who knows.

So, I am putting my trust and faith in you Ms. Huss. Even though I am a bit scared to keep going and finally figure out this absolute cluster***k, wild horses couldn't stop me from pulling up my big girl pants and jumping in once book 3 comes out.

Wow…. Excellent!

I am sold on these books! Book 3 can’t come soon enough for me! I’m anxious to see what they learn in the books and how she’s going to stop Paul!!! He’s the vampire you love to hate!

I am always interested in the EOBs in JA Huss books because I love to hear her unscripted and real! I’m so happy these did not get shelved!

Thank you for sharing your Vampire world with us!! I’m ready for more!!

I adore JS Huss' mind!

Each time I get into one of her books, near the beginning I usually find myself saying to myself something like, "This is really bizarre. This is dark. WTF am I doing here?!" Then, before I know it, I’m completely taken in by Huss's compelling and powerful undertow. Yeah, it's always a great ride. Kudos to her imagination and the strangeness of it. It’s a surprise for me every single time. For instance, in this book Ryet and Syrsee emerge as very sympathetic, and I normally don’t dig vampires unless there’s a ton of humor involved. Contrary to her author‘s notes, the humanity of these two creatures is really quite profound. I’m rooting for them. Whatever happens. I really truly look forward to the rest of the series. I hope the third book isn’t the last; this is quite a unique universe, and I'll bet there will be a lot more to explore. Thank you, JA Huss!
P.S. The voice actors are, each and every one, terriffic.

WOW, just wow…

I totally had to sit and process this one. And listening to the perfect narration by these four actors really brought the story to life. Though I think I am still missing some pertinent information in the overall scope of this story Paul and Josep are two evil dudes. I did not even try to put myself in this tale. Looking in from an outside perspective was scary enough. But at the end of the book my curiosity is definitely picked as to what will happen next. Can Syrsee and Ryet escape the future planned for them.

Sultry Vampire Tale

Blood Brothers continues the saga of the American Vampires. This is NOT your "typical" vampire romance as JA Huss creates her own set of rules her characters abide by. The first book, Blood Lovers, introduced us to Syrsee, the black witch who feeds Ryet, who is transforming into a full-fledged vampire. We met Paul in the "purple mist", who we think is the one pulling the strings, but in Blood Brothers, we're introduced to Josep and the Darkness. As more of the story is revealed, the less we seem to know as Paul, Josep and the Darkness each has his own plan, but are all trying to outsmart the other.
I've loved this author's stories for a while. She deviates from the norm which usually leaves my head spinning with thoughts of, "what the heck is going on?!" But I've always trusted her words, the twisty journeys she takes us on, and the conclusions that leave me with a big, satisfied "WOW!"
The narrators, CJ Mission, Finn Cassidy, and Oliver Clarke, who voice Ryet, Paul and Josep add another layer of complexity to the characters. Ava Erickson wonderfully conveys the frustration, worry and confidence of Syrsee as she tries to adapt to the ever changing needs of Ryet and Paul. Cannot wait for the next installment!
