About this listen

Discover the untold story of Captain James Hook. A man whose name has been synonymous with villainy and vengeance for generations. The legendary pirate who would become Peter Pan's greatest nemesis.

Long before he was the notorious Captain Hook, James was a fearless young man, with nothing to lose. Plagued by an unquenchable thirst for revenge, he becomes entangled with the nefarious Blackbeard and his merciless crew. Together, they embark on a treacherous journey through perilous waters, where loyalty is a fickle currency, and danger lurks behind every wave. It is here, amidst the lawless seas, that his transformation into a formidable pirate begins.

Amidst the chaos of life on the high sea, James encounters a bewitching young woman who possesses powers that both intrigue and terrify him. As their worlds collide, he is drawn into a web of secrets, alchemy, and emotions he never thought possible.

As James’ obsession with Pan deepens, and his vendetta becomes an all-consuming mission, he must navigate the treacherous waters of love, revenge, and his own inner demons. In this spellbinding addition to the beloved Neverland Chronicles, A Decent in to Darkness: A Neverland Chronicles Saga explores the complex journey of a man who would ultimately be branded a villain, revealing the depths of his humanity, the allure of darkness, and the price of vengeance.

Will love be his salvation or his ultimate undoing? This gripping tale of love and villainy will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the man behind the hook.

Interesting Take on Captain Hook

I listened to the Duet audiobook, and it was fantastic! I had a little bit of trouble getting into the story at first, but I think that was more based on the narrators accent than the story itself. That being said, the narrators chemistry and the way they made the characters come alive was wonderful to listen to. Once I got used to the accents, I was able to fully enjoy the book.

The story is a very interesting take on Captain Hook and his background. I know that as children we're supposed to see him as the bad guy of the Peter Pan story, but looking at his history and the experiences that may have led him to become that pirate captain that we know, is fascinating. The world that T.S. Kinley creates, and the story that is woven together, kept my attention and left me wanting more.

The idea of a rejected Lost Boy looking for revenge while finding both adventure and tragic love, along with the trauma of both what is written and implied of his childhood growing up at sea, and a bit of magic sprinkled in, really "hooked" me. There is some spice, and some scenes may be triggering to certain audiences, but everything did add to the story and wasn't just there as a novelty.

The story does end in a cliffhanger, and I definitely can't wait to see what happens next.

Loved it!

Set sail into darkness—this Hook retelling will captivate you!
This was a fantastic Captain Hook retelling! James’ story is fast-paced with a fresh, compelling take on how Hook came to be.
I listened to the audiobook, and the duet narration was spot on! James & Jacci completely transport you into this world. James’ gritty voice and accent bring all the pirate vibes, while Jacci’s ability to give each character a unique twist is truly impressive.
And that cliffhanger? It got me good—I’ll definitely be diving into Book 2!

Interesting Retelling!

The narration is FANTASTIC. I’m not sure if I would have enjoyed the book without it. The inflection and passion and emotion in both Jacci Prior and James Cavanaugh’s voices never fails to bring a story to life! Both are auto-buy narrators!

The story itself had some interesting bones. It’s a short book so the amount of time that it covered seemed at odds with how little we saw of the relationship. The writing was good, I just needed more of it! I would’ve liked seeing more of the relationship developing.

All that being said - that cliffhanger!

Just wow!!

My gosh was this such a unique retelling of Captain Hook!!! I was caught up in this story on the edge of my seat all the time. All the harshness James went thru in order to get back to Neverland. Then my heart ached even more knowing that he found his other half & started to believe in love, when he didn’t! The journey of him trying to get back home & the obstacles that surged. Then the bliss of happiness for it to then pause & getting twisted again!!! What!!!!!! This cliffhanger is everything & now I need the next book!!!!! Please don’t tell me this is how it ends 😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔💔.

Excellent Fantasy Storytelling

Well…. I’m hooked! Haha. This audiobook was fantastic. I really liked the spin in James’ history, as well as the plot and world, his journey and need for revenge against Peter Pan. And dang, that cliffhanger took me completely by surprise. As for the narration, it was excellent! The dual narrators were perfect. Their voices kept me focused and engaged in the story. I look forward to picking up other audiobooks voiced by these two narrators.

A villain’s origin story

I absolutely loved this tale! It’s rare that we get an entire book in the villain’s POV and, by most accounts, Hook is the villain in Peter Pan. Though this story makes you feel differently. James Cavanaugh was a wonderful James and I appreciated Jacci’s narration of Katherine interwoven in the performance!
