Theatre Royal. The very name summons up something of grandeur and eloquence. And it was. Hosted by Laurence Olivier, these big-name productions also included the creme de la creme of acting talents from John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Orson Welles to Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave and Olivier himself. They were based on works by the world's leading authors, among them Charles Dickens, Henry James, Oscar Wilde and Anton Chekhov. These are but a few of whose company we shall be keeping as we raise the curtain on our first instalment of theatrical history.

Guy de Maupassant, French master of the short story, had a simple, efficient style of writing and, like Anton Chekhov, found inspiration for his stories in the daily lives of humans, which often reveal our darker nature. Many of his works also centered on the Franco-Prussian War, in which he served. Volume VIII of his Complete Original Short Stories contains the following:

As blood and limb are sacrificed the true cost is seen but often set to one side as the dispute becomes embedded in emotions and reason falls away.

Guy de Maupassant nella novella Chissà!? descrive la incredibile avventura del protagonista, "un solitario, un sognatore", che viveva nella sua casa, circondato da cose, ninnoli, mobili, ai quali era affezionato tanto da sentirli importanti come persone e che una sera mettono in atto una inspiegabile rivolta e "decidono" di andarsene dalla casa in cui erano "ospiti". Vi torneranno poi, altrettanto misteriosamente, ma il protagonista essendo rimasto sconvolto per l'accaduto, dopo un viaggio, decide di farsi ricoverare in una casa di cura.

"Boule de Suif" de Guy de Maupassant : Parue en 1880, la nouvelle "Boule de Suif" a été depuis adaptée de nombreuses fois au théâtre, au cinéma, à la télévision. La mise en scène sonore de l'œuvre met en lumière toute l'ambiance si particulière du contexte historique de la guerre de 1870. L'interprétation du narrateur et des dialogues met en valeur l'extraordinaire analyse de l'auteur face à une société étriquée, hypocrite. Le personnage principal, Boule de Suif, prostituée au grand cœur, en est que plus bouleversant.

Un amoureux de la nuit déambule à Paris au hasard des rues. Mais, peu à peu, il prend conscience qu'un événement inhabituel va se produire. "Pour la première fois je sentis qu'il allait arriver quelque chose d'étrange, de nouveau. Il me sembla qu'il faisait froid, que l'air s'épaississait, que la nuit, que ma nuit bien-aimée, devenait lourde sur mon coeur. L'avenue était déserte, maintenant. Seuls, deux sergents de ville se promenaient auprès de la station des fiacres."

"Apparition" est une nouvelle fantastique de Guy de Maupassant. Lors d'une soirée, le marquis de la Tour-Samuel raconte une étrange anecdote. Cela lui est arrivé il y a cinquante-six ans, mais il ne se passe pas une nuit sans qu'il revoit en rêve cette aventure. Cela commença par une rencontre avec un ami qu'il avait perdu de vue depuis cinq ans.
