"The repairman" - A sci-fi story about a lighthouse, lizard like life forms, the lighthouse repairman, and a robot... "My boss leaned back, wiped his hands on his handkerchief and gave me "Lecture Forty-four on Company Duty and My Troubles". 'This department is officially called Maintenance and Repair, when it really should be called trouble-shooting. Hyperspace beacons are made to last forever - or damn close to it. When one of them breaks down, it is never an accident.

Engineers have created an intelligent robot bird and its main objective is to prevent murder! The robot is encouraged to study what murder is, and its definition of murder expands until humans find themselves no longer able to operate on dying patients or to eat a salad because of the salad's feelings! What to do? Terminate the robots or starve to death.

"Second Variety" is a short story by Philip K. Dick, first published in Space Science Fiction magazine, in 1953. A nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the West has reduced much of the world to a barren wasteland. The war continues, however, among the scattered remains of humanity. The Western forces have developed "claws", which are autonomous self-replicating robots to fight on their side. It is one of Dick's many stories in which nuclear war has rendered the Earth's surface uninhabitable.

Cobb's Anatomy is a wonderfully humorous work by Irvin S. Cobb, published in 1912. The author discusses the tummy, teeth, hair, hands and feet parts of the human body, creating deep belly laughs in the lucky listener of this classic piece of American humor!

"The Dancing Girls" is a short story collection by author Edna Ferber. The other stories in the collection are: "Old Lady Mandle", "Long Distance" and "One Hundred Percent". As almost always with the great Edna Ferber, the stories celebrate the ordinary humanity in all its fragility and resilience facing most of the things life throws at it.

"The Machine Stops" is a sci-fi story by E. M. Forster, first published in 1909. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity lives underground and relies on a giant machine to provide their needs. The story predicted new technologies such as instant messaging and the Internet.

"As a Man Tinketh" - written by James Allen, published in 1903. The book was described by Allen as "... dealing with the power of thought, and particularly with the use and application of thought to happy and beautiful issues. I have tried to make the book simple, so that all can easily grasp and follow its teaching, and put into practice the methods, which it advises. "The Skylark of Space" by E. E.Smith was written between 1915 and 1921 while Smith was working on his doctorate. Though the original idea for the novel was Smith's, he co-wrote the first part of the novel with Lee Hawkins Garby. The novel is considered to be one of the earliest works of interstellar travel and the first example of space opera... Close your eyes, prick up your ears and enjoy.

"Omnilingual" is an unusual sci-fi story as it focuses on archaeology on an alien culture. An expedition from Earth to Mars discovers a deserted city, the remains of an advanced civilization that died out 50,000 years before. The human scientists recover books and documents left behind, and are puzzled by their contents. Earnest young archeologist Martha Dane deciphers a few words, but the real breakthrough comes when the team explores what appears to have been a university in which the last few civilized Martians made their last stand...

"The Homely Heroine" is a collection of four short stories by author Edna Ferber. The other three stories in the collection are: "A Bush League Hero", "What She Wore" and "The Man Who Came Back". All of them center around ordinary people, showing off both their courage, dignity and their shortcomings when facing challenges in life. A moving and thoughtful listening experience.
