A little girl found a leg on the shore of my lake. The authorities won’t drain the lake to look for the rest of the body. They say it’s impossible, that 5,000 acres is too much, even to look into a potential murder. The thing is...they emptied it out a while ago just to clean up some old sewage. They absolutely can drain the lake if they want to. But maybe they know better than to try.

Operation Biting was one of the most thrilling British commando raids of World War II, and probably the most successful. In 1965, the German journalist Horst Krüger attended the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt, where 22 former camp guards were put on trial for the systematic murder of more than one million men, women and children. Essex, February, 1991. The weather is biting cold.
