The Voice in the Night is an uncanny story about a ship becalmed in fog in the middle of the Pacific. In the night, the watch hears a voice hailing the ship. It would seem to be a lone man in a rowing boat, but the individual does not wish to be seen. He is starving and urgently wants food - but despite this, he will not approach the ship and vehemently rejects the idea of being rescued. Instead they have to float some provisions out to him in a crate, which he takes off to a nearby island where his fiancée is dying of hunger.

The sea is a lonely place, particularly when your ship was blown off course and disabled. William Hope Hodgson takes this scenario and adds the discovery of a derelict ship floating near you. Of course you would go investigate wouldn't you? The captain and part of the crew - including the ship's doctor, who is telling the story - visit this enticing phantom. They find the ship inhabited by a living mold that had been lying dormant just waiting for its next meal.

William Hope Hodgson was an early British writer of supernatural and fantasy fiction, becoming an inspiration for later writers such as Clark Ashton Smith and others. Dating to 1904, this was his first published story, and it tells the tale of a mysterious marble statue coming to life and murdering the townspeople.

William Hope Hodgson wrote "The Terror of the Water-Tank" in 1907 and the story has been published in several pulp magazines since then. Von 1973 bis 1990 strahlte Sender Freies Berlin (SFB) die beliebte Hörfunksendung "Nur für starke Nerven" (ab 1987 unter dem Namen "Die Mitternachtsstory") aus. Der Schauspieler Friedrich Schoenfelder las darin Grusel- und Kriminalgeschichten für Erwachsene zur guten Nacht vor. Bezeichnenderweise schlug er selbst 1972 der Unterhaltungsabteilung des SFB vor, eine Sendereihe zu starten, in der von ihm redaktionell ausgewählte Gruselgeschichten zu Gehör kommen sollten.
