The three main characters in the novel are swept up in the violence during these turbulent years. One is a young boy from a poor village who is employed at a university lecturer's house. In questi racconti Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie delinea lucidamente e senza reticenze patriottiche gli aspetti più problematici della società nigeriana, attraversata da scontri religiosi, omicidi politici, corruzione, brutalità nelle carceri e maschilismo. Tra senso di smarrimento e più concreti problemi di soldi e di documenti, risulta però altrettanto chiaro che neppure l'emigrazione assicura una vita felice, nello specifico in quell'America che, seppure tanto vagheggiata, vista da vicino è ben diversa dal paradiso di ordinate villette unifamiliari dipinto in certi film.
