Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men was written in response to a competition run by the Academy of Dijon answering the prompt: What is the origin of inequality among men, and whether such inequality is authorized by natural law? Rousseau puts forth the concept of two types of inequity: natural/physical and moral/political. He focuses on moral inequality and its link to power and wealth. He also covers the areas of self-love, compassion for others, and free-agency.

Rousseau érige dans cet ouvrage un système entier d'éducation, loin des conventions sociales et des dogmes religieux : l'Église jusqu'alors détentrice du monopole en matière d'éducation, condamne l'auteur à la prise de corps ; l'ouvrage est brûlé en place public, fustigé par ses ennemis philosophes... Un ouvrage, toujours d'actualité, loin des caricatures dont on le pare sans même parfois, l'avoir lu...

En 1749, l'Académie de Dijon met au concours la question suivante : Si le rétablissement des sciences et des arts a contribué à épurer les mœurs. Alors qu'il va rendre visite à Diderot prisonnier à Vincennes, Rousseau feuillette le Mercure de France qui publie la question : "Si jamais quelque chose a ressemblé à une inspiration subite, écrira-t-il plus tard, c'est le mouvement qui se fit en moi à cette lecture ; tout à coup, je me sens l'esprit ébloui de mille lumières..."

Ce texte de Rousseau, paru initialement dans l'"Encyclopédie", souvent délaissé, voire tout à fait méconnu au profit du "Contrat social", occupe pourtant toute sa place dans l'œuvre laissée par le philosophe. À ses yeux, l'économie a en charge la bonne administration des questions d'ordre public comme l'éducation, la propriété, l'impôt.
