Im abgelegenen schottischen Fischerdorf Stoyre ist etwas im Gange. Die Einwohner verhalten sich irgendwie äußerst ... merkwürdig. Bei einem Routinebesuch findet Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth den Pub leer vor, während die Kirche unerwartet voll ist - und die Atmosphäre durchdrungen von Angst. Dann wird ein Ferienhaus durch eine Explosion dem Erdboden gleichgemacht, was die Einheimischen als "höhere Gewalt" bezeichnen. Hamish hat da allerdings eine andere Theorie. Mit Hilfe der scharfsinnigen Journalistin Elspeth Grant gibt er alles, um der Wahrheit auf die Spur zu kommen.

Agatha has fallen in love - again. This time it's the local gardener, George Marston, she has her eye on. But competition for his attention abounds. With her shameless determination Agatha will do anything to get her man - including footing the bill for a charity ball in town just for the chance to dance with him. Incomer Gloria French is at first welcomed in the Cotswold village of Piddlebury. She seems like a do-gooder par excellence, raising funds for the church and caring for the elderly. But she has a bad habit of borrowing things and not giving them back, so when she is discovered dead, poisoned by a bottle of elderberry wine, folk in the village don't mourn her passing too intently. Parish councillor Jerry Tarrant hires Agatha Raisin to track down the murderer. But the village is creepy and secretive and the residents don't seem to want Agatha to find who the murderer is.

Agatha Raisin has never been one for enforced holiday cheer, but her friendly little village of Carsely has always prided itself on its traditional Christmas festivities. But this year the bells will not be ringing out Silent Night as Mr John Sunday, an officer with the Cotswold Health and Safety Board, has chosen Christmas as the time to crack down on what he sees as gross misconduct by every man, woman and child in the vicinity.

Reports of a haunted house soon have Agatha snooping around, but it turns out the victim of the haunting is a universally disliked old biddy on whom someone is playing a practical joke. And then the old lady is murdered - but for Agatha, solving a crime is much more fun than hunting a ghost! Very soon she's up to her usual tricks, involving the villagers, local police, and, of course, her handsome new neighbour . . .

There are many ruined castles in Scotland. One such lies outside the village of Drim. The keening wind explains the ghostly noises, but when Charlie falls through the floor, Hamish finds the body of a dead man propped up in a corner of the cellar. After Charlie is airlifted to the hospital, Chief Detective Inspector Blair arrives to investigate the body, but there is none to be found. Dismissed as a drunk making up stories, Hamish has to find and identify the body and its killer before the "ghost" can strike again.

Sergeant Hamish Macbeth is alarmed to receive a report from a woman in the small village of Cronish in the Scottish Highlands. She has been brutally attacked and the criminal is on the loose. But upon further investigation, Hamish discovers that she was lying about the crime. So when the same woman calls him back about an intruder, he simply marvels at her compulsion to lie. This time, though, she is telling the truth. Her body is found in her home and Hamish must sort through all of her lies to solve the crime.

When Sergeant Hamish Macbeth is sent to investigate reports that the wealthy new laird of the remote Naglar House has disappeared, Scotland is hit by the worst storm in living memory. The road is washed away, phone lines are down, mobile reception is dead and his police radio is out of order. He is trapped with the laird's high-class house guests. Then he discovers the laird's body. Forced to remain overnight at the house, he interviews each of the guests and pieces together an alarming picture of clandestine infidelity, vicious jealousy, deadly revenge, lust, greed and fear.

PC Dorothy McIver quickly shows how determined she is to win over the locals, and she certainly seems to bring out the best in Macbeth. Then comes a brutal murder, and the pair find themselves plunged into a tangled web of conspiracy that acquires a sinister strand when the chilling shadow of Glasgow's underworld creeps to the Highlands and the peaceful village of Lochdubh.

Der letzte Kampf des Dorftyrannen. Jeder in Lochdubh kennt Randy Duggan. Seine Beleidigungen haben bereits zu handfesten Schlägereien geführt. Und als der Kerl auch noch Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth zu einem öffentlichen Kampf herausfordert, überbieten sich die Dorfbewohner nur so mit ihren Wetten. Die meisten erwarten, dass Hamish im Kampf unterliegt - aber niemand rechnet damit, dass Randy ermordet wird, bevor die beiden überhaupt zum Duell antreten. Genau das passiert allerdings.

Eigentlich wollte der gebeutelte schottische Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth im charmanten Küstenstädtchen Skag einfach nur Urlaub machen. Doch dann ist das Essen furchtbar, und der Typ im Nebenzimmer nervt ihn so sehr, dass er ihm ordentlich die Meinung geigt. Leider treibt der Kerl wenig später leblos im Fluss, und Hamish ist plötzlich der Hauptverdächtige in einem Mordfall. Statt Urlaub heißt es also: den eigenen Kopf aus der Schlinge ziehen und den Mörder dingfest machen.

Mit der Ankunft des Junggesellen Peter Hynd im Nachbarort ist es dort mit Ruhe und dörflicher Beschaulichkeit vorbei. Der äußerst charmante Mann löst bei den Frauen des Dorfes nämlich erbitterte Rivalität aus. Police Constable Hamish Macbeth findet diese Zickenkriege zunächst einfach nur unterhaltsam. Er lässt sich ja auch nicht so leicht um den Finger wickeln. Aber dann ist plötzlich von Morddrohungen und Missbrauch die Rede. Und es dauert nicht lange, bis auch noch eine Leiche auftaucht. So steht Hamish mal wieder vor der Herausforderung, einen Mörder dingfest zu machen!

In Schottland wird Sparsamkeit ebenso bewundert wie schöne Zähne. Daher haben Dr. Frederick Gilchrists günstige Preise und sein Talent, Zähne beinah schmerzfrei zu ziehen, dem Arzt eine große Patientenschar eingebracht. Vor allem die Damen rennen ihm die Tür ein. Weisere Highlander - wie Hamish Macbeth - halten sich trotzdem von seinen allzu beschäftigten Händen fern. Dann beginnt jedoch ein Zahn in Hamishs Mund unaufhörlich zu pochen, und absolute Todesqualen treiben den Dorfpolizisten in Gilchrists Praxis.

Als Priscilla Halburton-Smythe ihren Verlobten nach Lochdubh mitbringt, sind alle verzückt - bis auf Constable Hamish Macbeth, der selbst in Priscilla verliebt ist. Doch derlei Herzensangelegenheiten müssen warten, als Captain Bartlett, ein Gast auf Priscillas Verlobungsfeier, bei der Moorhuhnjagd erschossen wird. Hamish steht ein schwieriger Fall bevor, denn fast jeder der feinen Verlobungsgesellschaft scheint einen Grund gehabt zu haben, den garstigen Captain in die ewigen Jagdgründe zu schicken.

Maggie Baird verdankt ihr Vermögen einem Leben als Mätresse reicher Männer - und einem guten Händchen für Investitionen. Nun kommt sie als Frau mittleren Alters, dick und in Tweed gehüllt, ins schottische Lochdubh, wo sie ein luxuriöses Cottage besitzt. Auf Maggies Einladung hin ziehen bald weitere Gäste ein: ihre Nichte und vier frühere Liebhaber, allesamt in Geldnöten. Als Maggie auf mysteriöse Weise stirbt, hat Lochdubhs Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth genau diese fünf Hausgäste im Verdacht, nachgeholfen zu haben.

Zuerst sind es nur Abermillionen von Mücken, die über Lochdubh herfallen. Doch dann sucht ein noch größerer Plagegeist das schottische Dorf heim: Trixie Thomas. Die laute, aufdringlichen Frau hat hier eine Pension gekauft und wird bleiben, wie Hamish Macbeth mit Schrecken erfährt. Während die Dörflerinnen bald bewundernd zu Trixie aufsehen, gehen die Männer auf die Barrikaden. Denn Trixie will das Rauchen und den Alkohol aus Lochdubh verbannen und sorgt damit für viel Ungemach. Als Trixie schließlich vergiftet wird, spuckt auch Hamish Gift und Galle.

Als der schottische Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth die Nachricht erhält, dass im Gutshaus des schonungslosen Witzbolds Arthur Trent ein Mord geschehen ist, hält er das zunächst für einen schlechten Scherz. Umso überraschter ist er, dass Trent tatsächlich erstochen und anschließend erbarmungslos in einen Schrank gestopft wurde. An Verdächtigen ist auch kein Mangel: Das Haus ist voller habgieriger Verwandter, die alle mehr am Inhalt des Testaments als an der Aufklärung des Verbrechens interessiert sind.

Eigentlich will Hamish nur seinen Schnupfen auskurieren, als er die Einladung in ein Wellnesshotel auf der schottischen Insel Eileencraig annimmt. Seine Gastgeberin Jane dagegen bangt um ihr Leben und hofft, dass Hamish sie vor allem Arg beschützen kann. Kaum ist er da, gibt es tatsächlich eine Leiche. Allerdings musste nicht Jane ihr Leben lassen, sondern die schrecklich arrogante Heather. Verdächtige für die Tat gibt's unter der exklusiven Gästeschar genug - denn auch in der High Society tun sich erschreckende Abgründe auf.

When Fergus Macleod, Lochdubh's abusive, drunk dustman is put in charge of the local recycling centre and is dubbed the 'Environment Officer', Hamish Macbeth smells trouble. Happily, the rich Marquess of Peterhouse is in his dotage and wouldn't know a relative from a bedpost, so Eliza is sent to play the imposter. But things do not go as planned and Eliza is met by the new Marquess - wickedly handsome, and with all his wits about him. And somehow Eliza finds herself confessing her bluff to him and he in turn is much taken with her daring and charm - but can he fall in love with such a scheming widow from the world of trade?
