Heart of Darkness tells of Charles Marlow, an Englishman who took a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a ferry-boat captain in Africa. Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, who has been rumored ill, to his homeland, in a cover-up.

Before its 1902 publication, "Heart of Darkness" appeared as a three part series (1899) in "Blackwood's Magazine". It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels" and part of the Western canon. The story centers on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book.
