About this listen

A moving portrait of friendship by Elyce Arons as she reflects on her long relationship with Kate Spade, whom she met in college and with whom she cofounded the multi-billion-dollar fashion company as they came of age in 1990s New York.

When Elyce Arons first met Katy Brosnahan in a University of Kansas dorm room, she had no idea that this polo shirt–wearing Missouri girl would not only become her best friend but also change the course of her life. Back then, Katy and Elyce were preoccupied with frat parties and The Mary Tyler Moore Show; within a decade, they’d be scraping by in New York City, working day jobs to spend nights building a new line of handbags that would one day revolutionize the accessories industry.

We Might Just Make It After All brings us on the rollercoaster of adventures (and misadventures) that the best friends embarked on, from transferring colleges on a whim, to falling in and out of love with suitors, cramming into roach-infested Hell’s Kitchen apartments, and eventually designing the chic, simple bag that would launch the pair to global fame. Through it all, Katy and Elyce’s friendship remained unshakeable. This powerful friendship lasted nearly forty years, until Katy’s tragic suicide in 2018. We Might Just Make It After All celebrates her legacy as a cultural icon and loyal friend.

Set against the glitzy and gritty backdrop of downtown New York at the turn of the century, We Might Just Make It After All lovingly and candidly explores the power of a friendship as close as sisterhood, the challenges facing women entrepreneurs in the 1990s, and the timeless elegance of a generation-defining brand.

I only do Audible exclusively and Elyce’s book is exactly why. I adore listening to the authors bring the story to life with tone, inflections, enthusiasm, accents, and everything in between. I put Elyce up there alongside my personal favorite, Molly Shannon.

I was a young lawyer and budding entrepreneur when Kate Spade became a best-selling brand with a big personality. I was so touched to hear about the three women (and one man) behind it. It was not what I expected, but somehow so much more.

While Elyce acknowledged at the outset that Katy’s passing would not be the star of the show, by the end of the book, I forgot I even wanted to know more about it. I think that was the point. It was about her life, through the eyes of one of her two greatest mirrors.

I could have used even more detail in places, but it’s tricky for a friend to write about someone no longer here, and I understood why some passages were short. Any woman with a best friend will immediately know.

My heart goes out to all of Katy’s closest people, including her family and friends. Sometimes our brightest stars struggle in this place. I’m grateful she and her buddies sprinkled us with their fairy dust for as long as they did.

Fantastic, touching story. Amazing narration.

Such an inconceivable loss for her family and friends …and a sad example that we never really know exactly what people are going through. I will own one of her bags someday when I find the perfect one. This book was very well written and narrated. I appreciate Elyce sharing fun details of their many years together and the history of putting their business together. Fascinating!

I could not stop listening to this one.

Wonderful story of a lifelong friendship that ended far too soon. I especially loved learning about their grit and how they built their business together, as I proudly carried a Kate Spade bag during the early days of my career in the mid 90’s.

Heartfelt story that was both delightful and tragic

I really appreciated this book. Anybody who has a lifelong best friend will love listening to this. I appreciated the author reading this story; everything felt so fresh and poignant. It illustrates that it’s not about the loss of someone with the life of someone that’s really the important thing.

Loved it so much!

Wow. I am so thankful for this book. What a sweet friendship these two beautiful women had. I was so amazed by this story and appreciated this story. These women are a true inspiration. I lost a best friend to a drunk driver. I can relate to losing a friend, but my heart breaks for the author after looking Kate.

Amazing. I simply adore Kate spade.

This is book is about an enduring and loving friendship. It was so interesting to learn how the partners built Kate Spade from a start-up. The descriptions of NYC are amazing and I fondly remember some of the same spots when I lived there during that time. Great nostalgia from the 80’s,90’s and early 2000. I confess to not owning a single piece of Kate Spade, but am a big fan of Frances Valentine! Elyce did a wonderful job at narration and made it a totally immersive experience! Thank you for sharing your story Elyce!

I will admire the Kate Spade brand in a different way after listening to this beautifully written and read story . I can only imagine the heartfelt loss of such a dynamic friend, partner and Mother. A life well lived but cut way too short. Thank you for sharing. May her spirit live on!
