About this listen

AN INSTANT INDIE, USA TODAY, AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

"Delightful . . . We already know that E. Jean Carroll looked smashing when she went to court versus Donald J. Trump. But her irrepressible voice was, necessarily, repressed...Now she is saying pretty much everything."—The New York Times Book Review

"Buoyant." —The New York Times

A hilarious, hopeful, revelatory behind the scenes account of the trials that riveted the nation

You’ve heard about the tantrums, the seething, the storming out of court, yes. But what about E. Jean’s side of the story? What about the flight suits, the bottle of green Chartreuse, and the bob?

Not My Type puts you in a better seat than the jury box.

You will hear Alina Habba, Esq., “Trump’s most beautiful attorney,” asking E. Jean to “list” the people she has “slept with”—a list which turns out to be so marvelous, it is worth twice the price of this book. You will experience the fear and loathing of E. Jean’s “psychiatric evaluations,” and hear how she tries to cheer up Trump’s gloomy, $750-an-hour shrink by telling him about the strange white tablet Hunter S. Thompson gave her.

You will be in on the choosing of the “clothes for court,” and the creation of “the look”: a look that will help the jury connect the younger E. Jean who is attacked by Trump in Bergdorf’s with the older E. Jean who sits in the courtroom.

It’s all here: two dazzling trials, the full-tilt high stakes, the laugh-out-loud commentary, and the inspiring fact that a woman is never too old to get even.

Critic reviews

"Shockingly hilarious... a thriver from a bygone era when writers knew how to really live and propel their prose with rocket fuel... Carroll has written what may be the last great work of New Journalism... employs all her wit, erudition and insight."—Ron Charles, Book Club Newsletter, Washington Post

"Fascinating on so many levels...so, so funny...such keen and hilarious observations."―Katie Couric

"Uses quick asides, charming anecdotes, goofball humor and court transcripts to detail her fight against the most powerful man in America, it feels hopeful...She’s still so wholly E. Jean. Right there, on the page. Erratic. Funny. Full of life...A field guide for fighting fascism and winning, and not just winning but triumphing and remaining wholly, exuberantly, exasperatingly human."—Lyz Lenz, MSNBC

The most completely successful examples of bringing justice to Donald Trump came at the hands of New York lawyers, juries, and skillful judges…and a very gutsy writer who stood up for herself and the truth. We can take solace in how E. Jean Carroll and her team of gifted litigators have set the standard for bring Trump to account.

Love it: determination and brilliance combined to bring Trump to justice.

This is the best true crime courtroom drama I have ever read— non-fiction OR fiction.
I cried, I laughed, I raged. I was in that magnificent courtroom.
This was a trial of one woman against one man; yet it was a trial of any woman again any man who has ever abused, assaulted or raped her.
Thank you, E. Jean Carroll

John Grisham has nothing on E.Jean Carroll

While her reading is stilted, only her voice could relay her experience so eloquently. It’s fascinating from start to the glorious epilogue!

Both horrifying & hysterical. E.Jean is brilliant.

I grew up with no fashion sense and to this day, I wear jeans and could care less. But….., maybe I shoulda tried. Lol — never could have afforded single item! Still can’t after 63 years. Our lives couldn’t be any different, but her narration just ROCKED! What a fighter and what a story. Loved this book and loved the accounting of trial and prep. Way to go after that bully creep!! Love the dogs’ names, the diet, the makeup info. Loved ALL of it!!

E Jean is a boss!

E.Jean is an outstanding example female strength and resilience. She stood up to a man who hates women and believes the rule of law does not apply to him. She narrated her story with humor and in a way that it has her reader rooting for her even though they already know the outcome.
You’ll forever have my love and respect E. Jean!

Perfectly Written and Narrated

I love autobiographical books! I gobble them up and quote them for decades! But THIS is going to be on top of my Top Ten list! Give it a Pulitzer!

Hilarious, charming, and a bit shocking!

I rarely read sexual assault memoirs and have scrupulously avoided books about current political events. But I decided to get this audiobook because Ron Charles (book review editor for the Washington Post) strongly recommended not only the book but the audio version in terms I could not resist. He was not wrong. I have never read or listened to anything quite like this. The author’s narration is so raw, so authentic, so charming that I could not put this down. Her digressions and personal stories are funny and revelatory. And the main through line is one of the most audacious court room dramas I’ve ever heard.

Extraordinary
