About this listen
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild.
Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.
It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.
The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job. The abbey is rich, the nuns are pretty, and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.
Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war....
The Red Knight is the first book of The Traitor Son Cycle.

A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Story
All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first. I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.

Now, however, one has been found by the unlikeliest of wielders: Sampson Gaard, a blind but ambitious prince with something to prove. The only question is whether he controls the blade or the blade him. With an insidious evil lurking in the shadows, the answer may very well determine the fate of all Kingfall.

Not my cup of tea
The story was good but a lot of military ramblings that allowed my mind to wander. I like to know whats happening in the battle and how the characters set the scene but sometimes a little less is better.
And a lot of strong language, but I guess in a military camp there will be strong language. - - - I did keep wondering though 'Did they use that particular cuss word when the knights were around', then I'd think it's not actually earths timing but fantasy". As I said, This book did not keep my interest enough to keep my mind from wondering. It was like when you are cornered by someone at a gathering and they go on and on, and on and on, And you think "I really should pick up some milk on the way home"... And then they actually say something interesting or ask you a question, that's when you back the book up 30 seconds or so to hear what happened.
I gave it an overall 4 stars because although it's not my cup of tea, the main story itself was enjoyable (once you get past the babbling) and I'm sure there are some out there that would appreciate all that military babble.

Great story! Purchased the wrong Cameron but this book was a pleasant surprise!
I liked it all! The Red Knight is definitely worth the investment. Can’t wait to finish the series and definitely happy to have new author to consider!

Lots of POVs and a bit dark
The narrator did an excellent job and got me to the end of the book.
I found the large number of POVs made the story difficult to follow. A couple of times I was not sure who was doing what where.... There were a couple of the POVs that I really enjoyed but others I did not enjoy at all.
Some of the twists and turns in the story were fun! Many of the battle scenes were exciting and well written. However, for me the overall story was depressing and made me decide to skip the rest of this series.

Amazing fantasy series
One of my favorite things about the series is the book doesn't hold back from the grisly details and plot armor is mostly not an issue. I wanted something like Berserk in book form and this has mostly filled that itch. Plenty of death and gore, with things not always going in the favor of the hero. If you enjoyed berserk, I think you will enjoy this series.

Great fight scenes but I struggled to stay engaed.
The fights and battles in this book are a readers dream. Each word is selected carefully to keep the pacing quick and yhe imagery is fantastical.
However, so many characters lack anything that makes me care about them. The romance feels soulless and unnecessary. and there are too many POVs that I kept waiting to some how be relevant that never were and at the same time I kept waiting to get some slice of life moments for the main casts like we were getting from random villagers but it never came.
The magic system is awesome! It asks and answers the question "÷what if Christianity was cool?" and it manages to do it in a way that is neither preachy nor offensive in my opinion. Just a cool way to explore European mythology, almost like an alternate history story.
It's not a book I'm likely to recommend to anyone but I will likely read the next book happily.

Gritty fantasy at its best
Would you consider the audio edition of The Red Knight to be better than the print version?
Yes I would since Matthew Wolf is a very good narrator.
What other book might you compare The Red Knight to and why?
I would compare it to Joe Abercrombies books. It is the same gritty fantasy.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I am looking forward to listening to more from Miles Cameron.

this is my absolute favorite series, bar none.
this series is better than any other fantasy, military, etc. series that I've read and I've read them all. Cameron sweeps you up and never let's you go - not for a single sentence. that old adage, show me don't tell me it's perfectly borne out in this series. every sentence, every character, every scene is perfectly in tune. it's tight, there's no floppy book 2.. if you haven't read this series, do yourself a favor and spend the credits. all five books are out and beautifully narrated.

New favorite characters, (Thomas Lachlan & Sir Allison), starting the next book right now. I doubt that I will find another story as fun for a long long while
