About this listen
“Epic fantasy at its finest—an homage to storytelling and legend, richly told and endlessly engaging.”—Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter
Don’t miss the first novel in this stunning Silk Road-inspired epic fantasy series from R.R. Virdi—a saga of legends, lies, and the secretive storyteller who’s spun them all.
All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first.
I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.
My name is Ari.
And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil.
“Rich world-building, plenty of action, and devious twists abound. Very highly recommended!” —Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of V-Wars and Kagen the Damned
A Macmillan Audio production from Tor Books.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Story
So many stories begin the same way: With a prophecy. A chosen one. And the inevitable quest to slay a villain, save the kingdom, and fulfill a grand destiny. But this is not that kind of story. It does begin with a prophecy: A child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, a cruel immortal god-king, and save the kingdom. And that prophecy did anoint a hero, Jian, raised since birth in luxury and splendor, and celebrated before he has won a single battle.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

For centuries, vampires freely roamed the land until the Grays came out of nowhere, wiping out half the population in a night. The survivors fled to the last vampire city of First Light, where the rules are simple. If you’re poor, you drink weak blood. If you’re nobility, you get the good stuff. And you can never, ever leave. Palace maid Sam has had enough of these rules, and she’s definitely had enough of cleaning the bedpans of the lords who enforce them. Story
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

The First Binding
While the narrator was great. The storyline had several parts that were unfinished and unexplored. The end of the book was a terrible ending. And all Manal left the book wanting for it’s end. I don’t know if there will be a book 2 But there needs to be something to finish this story. If not this book is a waste of your time.

All stories have already been told.
This is a good book. I know some of the reviews are negative because it shares some similarities with other works but honestly what book doesn’t? The writing is good, the narration is also good, minus the female voice, and I enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next book.

Amazing Story!
This is the first novel I have read by Virdi but it will certainly not be the last. You will first meet Ari as an adult, the greatest storyteller in the land and then listen in as he tells his story to a mysterious lady. The character development is amazing as you get to know and follow young Ari on his adventures and misadventures. Like most young men the young hero is ruled largely by his passions and pays the price for them over and over on h8s quest for knowledge. Despite being a clever hoodlum there is also a but of the white knight in Ari.
The story of young Ari is intertwined with the adult storyteller who is still half hero and half hoodlum it seems. i am loikung forward to the next book to continue the adventures.

Worth It
Many other reviews could tell you what this book is about and how in compares and contrasts to The Name of the Wind. I just want to tell you about my experience with this book. So I bought the audiobook opening day but really struggled to get into this book. The beginning was very slow and (in my opinion) dull. I kept on switching to other books, but something kept on wanting me to give it a fair chance. More than once I seriously thought about giving up on it. About 45% into the book is chapter 46 called A King’s Gambit it was at that chapter I really started getting into it. I started to love this book once the protagonist arrived at Hogwarts err…I mean the Ashram. For patient readers I thought this book was really good and my hope and expectation is that the second book will hold my attention from start to finish.

An ode to storytelling
Virdi clearly fell in love with the art of storytelling, the nature of stories and how they change, and what it means to be the one who changes them. With exquisite attention to the beauty of prose and lyricism, Virdi tells not one person’s story, but a whole world’s.

Alternate universe name of the wind?
The story is solid, just different enough to not get hit with any plagiarism claims. It the feels like a jab at Rothfuss. lets just hope virdi can finish his story.
Over all a good listen, and really makes me interested in what he has in store for us

Frustrating
There are a lot of aspects of this book to love. Interesting magic and characters and it’s mysteries and revelations. That only make it more frustrating when ⅓ of it is pulled almost directly from the Name of the Wind. So much so that I could predict what was coming next - even with dialogue - it might come from a lightly different character, but it was the same. This is more like an alternate telling than an original story - which makes the original parts all the more frustrating. With a little more time - this could have been a remarkable original story.

I left my review, and I glowered
Fun story, more enjoyable than Name of the Wind for me because Ari is much more likable than Kvothe. But please, for the love of the bindings, can someone get this author a thesaurus? No more glowering!!

a worth while read
I am so glad I got this one! it was a little difficult for me to get into but honestly I think that was more due to my schedule and not being able to sit with it and engage for more then a few minutes at a time when I started reading this one.
once I did let the story take me, wow..I cannot wait for the next one! well written, well read, the characters are well rounded and the narrator does an excellent job bringing them to life!
