About this listen
Kathe Koja's classic, award-winning horror novel is finally available as an audiobook.
Nicholas, a would-be poet, and Nakota, his feral lover, discover a strange hole in the storage room floor down the hall - "Black. Pure black and the sense of pulsation, especially when you look at it too closely, the sense of something not living but alive." It begins with curiosity, a joke - the Funhole down the hall. But then the experiments begin. "Wouldn't it be wild to go down there?" says Nakota. Nicholas says "We're not." But they're not in control, not from the first moment, as those experiments lead to obsession, violence, and a very final transformation for everyone who gets too close to the Funhole.
THE CIPHER was the winner of the 1991 Bram Stoker Award, and was recently named one of io9.com's Top 10 Debut Science Fiction Novels That Took the World by Storm. Long out-of-print and much sought-after, it is finally available as an audiobook, with a new foreword by the author.

Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Immense as a mountain, the ancient Tower holds unnumbered ringdoms, warring and peaceful, stacked one on the other like the layers of a cake. It is a world of geniuses and tyrants, of airships and steam engines, of unusual animals and mysterious machines. Soon after arriving for his honeymoon at the Tower, the mild-mannered headmaster of a small village school, Thomas Senlin, gets separated from his wife, Marya, in the overwhelming swarm of tourists, residents, and miscreants.

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

Story
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: 23 of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter, sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Writers' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months", and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them.

Story
It was Vera’s idea to buy the Itza. The “world’s most advanced smart speaker!” didn’t interest Thiago, but Vera thought it would be a bit of fun for them amidst all the strange occurrences happening in the condo. It made things worse. The cold spots and scratching in the walls were weird enough, but peculiar packages started showing up at the house - who ordered industrial lye? Then, there was the eerie music at odd hours, Thiago waking up to Itza projecting light shows in an empty room.

Story
You may think you know how the fairytale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes. On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them. The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

Story
In the darkness of a vast cave system, cut off from the world for millennia, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed. Swarming from their prison, they multiply and thrive. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. Deaf for many years, Ally knows how to live in silence. Now, it is her family's only chance of survival. They must leave their home, shun others, and find a remote haven where they can sit out the plague. But will it ever end? And what kind of world will be left?

A narration on spaghettification
The performance was fantastic, the story was a dreadful descent into madness. Would absolutely recommend it, but I have no idea how to describe it.

performance was pretty good, Story somewhat interesting, but it can be dull at times. definitly day dreamed or stopped listening time to time. like a rollercoaster with you on the edge to the top, but then its slow on the way down with few turns or hills till it grinds to a dull halt

Excellent story / excellent narration
Everything about this book is top-notch. Loved the story, and it was narrated quite well. I've been waiting so long for this to come out in audiobook, so I put everything on hold and jumped right on it. Trust me, if you haven't read this one, do it now. You won't be disappointed. Thanks so much to Crossroads Press for putting this back out.

A rollercoaster!!
Gosh I'm not sure what to say but I would recommend this listen for a rainy weekend. The narrators were great. I even found myself yelling at the TV more than once for the characters to get a hold of themselves, mad that the MC would not get rid of his GF, the groupies and the fact everyone just abandoned their lives.I did appreciate the human aspect of him getting mad then fealing bad when he did. sometimes I wasn't sure if it was the fun hole making him do it or not,it was as if I was going crazy too I mean can you die when your feet get torn off at the ankle?

On the seat on the edge of your seat!
I truly enjoyed where this book went and how evil and twisted it portrayed humans and everything they are capable of doing to achieve some sort of delusions of grandeur; to live as a superior being.

Love and Dread Meets Obsession
Joshua Saxon brings the perfect sense of impending doom and humor to his narration of The Cipher. Kathe Koja's award-winning novel takes on unexpected and new sharp edges in this reading as we follow Nicholas and Nakota on their addicted journey with the Funhole. On the surface it is the kind of fantastic tale that would defy logic. Why would our two misfits stay together? Why would they tempt the trespasses of the Funhole? When everything indicates madness this way lies why do they keep pressing forward? Koja explores the incremental lure of love and longing as we watch the two steps back one step forward relationship between all the characters. There are no heroes, no saviors, no act of God to make things alright as we follow this cast and their obsession with the potential for danger and horror in the Funhole. Joshua Saxon bluntly exposes the body horror and madness in his world weary presentation. It works wonderfully for this horror tale of the unknown temptation just within view, but unreachable by most. Highly recommended.

Eh
Not to yuck anyone’s yum, but this story can be summed up like this: Fun hole, beer, sleep, sex. Over and over again, until the end of the book where nothing really happens. It was well written and the narration was fantastic, but the book itself was not my cup of tea.
