About this listen

The following contains mature content and language some may find offensive. Listener discretion is advised.

When the sacred is defiled, darkness awakens.

The Wallace family's vacation to a luxury game reserve in Zimbabwe becomes a living nightmare in this heart-stopping psychological thriller from visionary writer/director Nyasha Hatendi. Starring Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things, The Deliverance), who delivers a gripping performance in his Audible debut, Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi (mBeerwee) plunges listeners into a world where ancient spirits collide with inner wounds and family secrets are as deadly as the strange beasts that stalk the savanna.

Lost in his headphones, self-absorbed teen Dashon Wallace (McLaughlin) never imagined that a strained family trip meant to bring everyone closer could unravel so completely. But when he unwittingly desecrates hallowed ground, he unleashes the Mbirwi, a vengeful entity born from centuries of colonial oppression. As possessed wildlife and shape-shifting horrors close in, Dashon must confront not only the supernatural threat but also the horrors of his own past to save what remains of his family.

Presented in spectacular Dolby Atmos, Sacrilege blends pulse-pounding suspense with profound explorations of identity and privilege to deliver a thriller as thought-provoking as it is terrifying. With its lush sound design and sensational ensemble cast, Sacrilege redefines the boundaries of audio storytelling, drawing listeners into an immersive experience they will not soon forget.

About the Performer

Caleb McLaughlin is one of Hollywood’s most exciting young stars. Next up, he will star in the highly anticipated final season of Netflix’s global phenomenon Stranger Things, reprising his beloved role as Lucas Sinclair. The Emmy Award-winning series is set to conclude with Season 5 in 2025, marking the end of a cultural juggernaut that has defined a generation of television storytelling. McLaughlin has been praised for his nuanced portrayal of Lucas, earning a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance by a Youth and a Screen Actors Guild Award alongside his cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. He was also nominated for the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on the show. His performance has earned additional recognition from the BET Awards, MTV Movie & TV Awards, and Teen Choice Awards, cementing his place as one of the breakout stars of the acclaimed ensemble.
In 2024, he starred in Lee Daniels’ chilling Netflix supernatural thriller The Deliverance, inspired by a true-life exorcism case, playing the pivotal role of Nathaniel “Nate” Jackson. He also appeared in Jeymes Samuel’s genre-defying biblical epic The Book of Clarence as the sharp and streetwise “Dirty Zeke,” which showcased his ability to take on bold and unconventional roles. In 2023, McLaughlin played Lil Dru Joyce III in Peacock’s Shooting Stars, a coming-of-age sports drama chronicling the rise of NBA legend LeBron James and his childhood friends. He was praised for his emotional depth and authenticity and added another layer to his growing list of dynamic characters.

His screen credits also include roles in Blue Bloods, Forever, Law & Order: SVU, Shades of Blue, Unforgettable, and Steven Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird.
After many years in front of the camera as an esteemed actor, McLaughlin added musician to his title with the release of his debut original single, “Neighborhood,” in November 2021 via Steve Stoute’s creator platform, UnitedMasters. The song was written and produced by Rashad (Rick Ross, Pharrell, De La Soul). He released his second single, “Soul Travel,” on May 6th, 2022, and plans to release more music in the future.

I really appreciate background sounds that add immersion to the story, the voice actor did a great job (I love ot when there are distinctive voices for every character). I liked the story, overall, but it did leave me a little confused at times. I'd be interested in reading another story from the author.

The sounds and voice work were amazing.

I couldn’t tell if they all died or if Dashon was dreaming? Ok, now I can say I liked it because I was left wondering. Really, the story was quite good.

but this story... Now, during my first listen I got to the climax, felt lost and had to go back to the beginning. During the second listen I caught what I had missed and it made sense up until the climax. The story was all good until the end. I dont want to give anything away, but I dont understand what happened. I have thoughts but it really wasnt clear. Maybe I need a 2nd listen of the last hour. Or what Im thinking is correct 🤷🏽‍♀️

I always live a full cast recording...

what I liked most was that it was a performance not just reading the book.

The sound effects &music Fire

The end just felt almost like a farce with the last line. Let's just say my response in the long pause at the end was alternate to the author's selection.

We had an amazing build up, some profound moments, it moved quickly and had an amazing cast, movie like sound effects-- no doubt the performance is a knock out. But the story leads you in loops and although suspenseful, just wondering what was the real storyline being confronted? We have a group of anti-heroes that goes through what must be the roughest last night of their lives, end up in a transitioned state, and then, it was all a.........

I don't know, its worth a read for the performance alone -- just be prepared for a roller coaster plot to no where, IMHO.

I Have General Observations *Slight Spoils*

I listen to a fair share of content in the horror genre, and so often i find myself calling the next moves of the characters before they’ve happened. This was different. Great cast of voice actors. I wish we’d gotten to know each character more, but the actors brought them to life very well. This story wasn’t wrapped up in the same pretty bow so many end with, and that was a refreshing surprise. Definite recommendation.

Not the ending I coming
