About this listen

A revolutionary new approach to Alzheimer's care, focusing on a patient's strengths to maintain connections with others and the world

There currently is no cure for Alzheimer's disease - though it can be treated. For the last 15 years, John Zeisel, PhD, has spearheaded a movement to treat Alzheimer's non-pharmacologically by focusing on the mind's strengths.

I'm Still Here is a guidebook to Dr. Zeisel's treatment ideas, showing the possibility and benefits of connecting with an Alzheimer's patient through their abilities that don't diminish with time, such as understanding music, art, facial expressions, and touch. By harnessing these capacities, and by using other strategies, it's possible to offer the person a quality life with connection to others and to the world.

Supporting Their Reality: Practical Ways to Engage

I'm Still Here by John Zeisel is a compassionate and insightful guide for those navigating the challenges of Alzheimer's disease. While some of the conversations and resources feel a bit dated (understandable, given the book's 2009 publication date), the overall advice and perspective are incredibly valuable. The information may not always reflect the most current research, but the core principles and actionable strategies remain timeless and practical.

One of the standout aspects of the book is how it helps readers understand the world of someone living with Alzheimer's. Zeisel provides practical, empathetic advice on how to engage with a loved one who may no longer recognize you or be receptive to interactions. One example that resonated with me was the suggestion to leave and re-enter a conversation in a way that helps the person re-engage, especially if they don’t recognize you. It's a simple yet profound approach that can make a big difference in fostering connection.

A key theme throughout the book is the importance of validating the person’s reality, even if it doesn’t align with your own. As Zeisel emphasizes, their reality is still very much real to them, and it's crucial to respect that—while still maintaining boundaries and ensuring safety.

Overall, I'm Still Here is an essential read for caregivers, family members, or anyone trying to understand and support someone with Alzheimer's. It offers practical tools for building communication, reducing frustration, and strengthening emotional bonds, all while honoring the unique experience of the person living with the disease.

My husband has Alzheimers and I tried to read a little and become knowledgeable the first year. I was soon overwhelmed and backed away. I now find audiobooks to be much easier.
