About this listen

Grimsby, a junior Auditor in the magical Department of Unorthodox Affairs, finds himself on the other side of the law in this spellbinding urban fantasy.

Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby may have one case under his belt, but he’s still a novice Auditor in Boston’s Department of Unorthodox Affairs. And he’s already made mistakes.

Desperate to repair his fraying friendships, he doesn’t ask too many questions when a mysterious patron offers him the chance to join a heist of an otherworldly vault—and in the process find answers that could make things right.

Complications arise when Grimsby learns that his partner, Mayflower, is keeping secrets about his past. Between facing new demons, old horrors, and monsters—both Usual and Unorthodox—Grimsby soon realizes nothing is how it appears and that not asking enough questions just might be his downfall.

Coming together

Great story. I only saw one twist coming, well done. Looking forward to the next addition.

Best Book Yet

Although there were a few of the inevitable Heist tropes, I thoroughly enjoyed Cold Oron Task. James Butcher's alt Boston continues to get fleshed out and the characters are as well written as ever. Every book the story gets better and I can't wait to see what's next for Grimsby and Mayflower.

What a ride!

I am really enjoying this series. I anxiously awaited this book as soon as it was announced, and it did not disappoint. ...but now I have to wait until a book 4 is announced, so that's the only disappointment for me.

Complex story, but every subplot pays off wonderfully

Rayne & Grimsby's bond. Mayflower's past, family, & dark secrets. Wudge's door, and how he'll open it with the nail... where it is. The nature, culture and backstory of the huntsmen--plural. Grimsby's magic, and why it sucks. The familiars, and the story behind them. The fate of Mansgraf's familiar (audiobook, don't know how its spelled). The story of the girl from the demon woman's club (whose mother Mayflower killed). Finally, the nature and history of the coven.

Each one is a subplot in this book that pays off wonderfully. Add to that Grimsby just being the self-deprecating, irrepressably good and kind, and you have a book that's a delight to experience. I love the banter between Mayflower and Grimsby. Really, between Grimsby and everybody. Wudge is still the best.

Oh, and the plot centers around Grimsby trying to... help Rayne. Iykyk. And the cherry on top--best new character: Abe. That is all. This book is great. Read the first two first--the story is strongly character-driven, and you need those journeys for everything to matter sufficiently.

Hope breathed into one’s soul

Humanity and life’s lessons we all can find in our own lives. Hope for Tomorrow and beyond told by an outstanding author and read for audible by a talented narrator. I have read and listened to all of Jim Butcher’s novels. Highly recommend!

People Like Them

All I can say is, More please!
Humor combined with intense emotions. This audio makes you feel all the emotions of the characters. Well done Mr Butcher. You've become an outstanding author in your own right.
As always, this narrator brings your words to life.
Hopefully, we fans won't have to wait long for more.

Just wonderful!

Wonderful story. I only wish it was longer. 12 hours feels a little short, but it was very enjoyable.
