About this listen
For as long as you deceive, you are a slave to others because they have leverage over you. Lies are not sustainable. Society is already burdened with deceit, facilitated in part by our technological advances. But the deceit that we live is learned early on.
Secrets, false appearances, the public persona dichotomy, and the desire to create illusions are not a part of our purpose. As we depart further from this purpose, we fall deeper into a fraudulent existence.
In this audiobook, I examine the fantastic origin of the fraudulent life through our beginnings. A family is a smaller version of a society. It is at home that we build character. Sometimes, we break the chain of dysfunction, but sometimes we don't. It is this that directs our lives.

Story
Family defined the cultural identity of Prachi and her brother, Yush, connecting them to a larger Indian American community amid white suburbia. But their belonging was predicated on a powerful myth: the idea that Asian Americans, and Indian Americans in particular, have perfected the alchemy of middle-class life, raising tight-knit, high-achieving families that are immune to hardship. Molding oneself to fit this image often comes at a steep, but hidden, cost.

We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Story
The rules for living in the real world have changed, because the world we live in has changed. Much of the conventional wisdom the last generation has passed on just doesn't apply like it once did. If you want to win, and win big, and, more importantly, keep what you work so hard for, you need a crystal-clear view of how the real world works - not how you wish it worked, but how it actually works.

As a deafblind woman with partial vision in one eye and bilateral hearing aids, Elsa Sjunneson lives at the crossroads of blindness and sight, hearing and deafness—much to the confusion of the world around her. And she knows how wrong our one-size-fits-all definitions of disability can be. Part memoir, part cultural criticism, part history of the deafblind experience, Being Seen explores how our cultural concept of disability is more myth than fact, and the damage it does to us all.

Story
Everything you “know” about yourself today is based on who you decided you were when you were just four or five years old. In your childhood you formed decisions about yourself before you were even capable of thinking logically. Those decisions were based on a child’s emotional survival brain, and they are the foundation of the neural pathways of thought and feelings that are instrumental in forming your identity, both positive AND negative. This is why so many people have challenges in their adult lives, especially when it comes to their personal and professional relationships.

As M. E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, we are your neighbors, co-workers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent - even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence.... Who are we? We are highly successful, non-criminal sociopaths and we comprise 4% of the American population (that's 1 in 25 people!).
