Inspired by her grandparents’ struggles with diabetes, Duong has worked on innovative projects like GlucoCheck, a non-invasive glucose monitoring device, and a mental health prediction app. A first-generation college student with a 3.99 GPA, she has excelled in KSU’s Honors College and the Double Owl Pathways program. Duong credits KSU for shaping her purpose to use technology to improve lives and inspire meaningful change. STORY 2: Kennesaw Continues Outdoor Movie Series on May 17 Kennesaw’s free Outdoor Movie Series continues on May 17 at 8:15 p.m. with a showing of *The Parent Trap* at Swift-Cantrell Park. Attendees can bring blankets or low-backed chairs, while food vendors and family-friendly activities start at 6 p.m. VIP tents are available for $50, including seating and a reserved spot. Before the movie, enjoy free games like hula-hoop contests and sack races. The event coincides with the Backyard Campout, featuring stargazing, s’mores, and field activities. Campout registration is $25 for bring-your-own tents or $50 for pre-set campsites, including meals. Advance reservations are required. STORY 3: Hundreds Gather at Cobb Prayer Breakfast to Reflect, Reconnect and Pray Around 900 attendees gathered at the Cobb Galleria Centre for the 41st Annual Cobb County Prayer Breakfast on the National Day of Prayer. The event featured nondenominational worship, scripture readings, and hymns led by Linked UP Church. Keynote speaker Kevin Paul Scott, a Cobb native and leadership consultant, delivered an inspiring message centered on the idea that "If you have a pulse, you have a purpose." Sharing humorous parenting prayers and reflections on life’s meaning, Scott encouraged attendees to embrace their purpose. Local leaders, including Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, emphasized the power of daily prayer and community fellowship. Brown Honored with Justice Robert Benham Award Superior Court Judge Sonja N. Brown was honored at the 25th Annual Justice Robert Benham Awards for Community Service for her dedication to volunteerism. Serving Cobb County since January 2023, Judge Brown is active in philanthropy, including her work with the Tommy Nobis Center and Covenant House Georgia, where she raises awareness about youth homelessness. With a distinguished legal career spanning roles in DeKalb and Fulton counties, she also holds degrees from Clark Atlanta University, Duke Divinity School, and Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. Judge Brown expressed gratitude for the award and her commitment to community service. STORY 5: All Vision To Learn Summer Break 2025 Appointments Have Been Booked All 680 appointment slots for Vision To Learn’s free eye exams and glasses at nine Cobb County Public Library locations this summer were filled within a week of registration opening. Vision To Learn, a nonprofit serving children ages 5-18, has partnered with Cobb libraries since 2018, making Cobb the first in Georgia to host the program. The initiative, part of Learn4Life’s Atlanta Vision Project, aims to provide glasses to all metro Atlanta elementary students in need by 2028, with additional clinics planned across several counties this summer. Sheffield, first elected in 2020, celebrated the win at her Mableton home and emphasized her commitment to serving all constituents, regardless of party affiliation. Her victory, alongside Democrat Erick Allen's in District 2, restores the Cobb County Commission's Democratic majority. Hardwick, the first Republican to run for the seat in years, narrowed Sheffield's early voting lead but fell short. Sheffield's next term will focus on health and wellness in her district. STORY 2: Murph's Restaurant to Close for Galleria Remodel, Future Uncertain The future of Murph’s, a restaurant and bar opened by Braves legend Dale Murphy in 2017, is uncertain as the Cobb Galleria Centre undergoes a major remodel. The Galleria’s renovation, set to begin this fall, includes demolishing the space where Murph’s is located. Initially assured they’d be part of the remodel, the Murphys were recently informed their restaurant is no longer in the plans. Despite strong community support and success, Murph’s is set to close in August. The Murphys hope to negotiate a solution in an upcoming meeting with Galleria management but are also exploring other location options near Truist Park. STORY 3: Cobb EMC Directors Look Back on Scandal, Discuss Looming Term Limits Cobb EMC has rebounded from a decade of scandal under former CEO Dwight Brown, who was accused of self-dealing and mismanagement, leaving the co-op in financial turmoil. Since then, a new board elected in 2011-2012 has transformed the organization, achieving some of the lowest electric rates in Georgia and top national reliability. However, term limits approved in 2012 mean the entire board will be replaced between 2026 and 2028, raising concerns about the loss of institutional knowledge. While directors support term limits, some suggest staggering turnover to ease transitions. The co-op remains in strong standing, with members set to elect new leadership in the coming years. Allen's victory, alongside Monique Sheffield's projected win, restores the board's Democratic majority. The District 2 seat was vacated in February after Jerica Richardson's removal due to a redistricting battle. Allen emphasized unity in his victory speech, pledging to bring the fractured district together. Adams, despite her loss, highlighted her campaign's focus on giving a voice to underrepresented constituents. Allen's leadership is expected to strengthen collaboration across the county and state levels. STORY 5: 'Apples and Dump Trucks': Cobb Schools Approves Band Loan, New Scoreboard Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale defended the district’s processes after approving a $50,000 loan for Pebblebrook High School’s band uniforms and a $439,497 privately funded scoreboard for Walton High. The Pebblebrook loan, to be repaid over five years, is one of the few exceptions the district makes for extracurricular funding. Walton’s scoreboard, funded by private donations, required board approval due to its cost exceeding $200,000. Ragsdale emphasized that all projects, regardless of funding source, must follow district procedures. Board members highlighted the importance of supporting programs like Pebblebrook’s large, nationally recognized band while maintaining clear policies for funding and approvals. The board also approved $450,000 for additional Vapor Wake K-9s to enhance school security. Ragsdale announced the rehiring of two Campbell High School coaches after an investigation into their nonrenewal. Other approvals included $19 million for Tapp Middle School renovations, $1.7 million for school buses, and a $439,497 video scoreboard for Walton High School. STORY 2: 15th Annual Rotary Club of North Cobb Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival The 15th annual Smoke on the Lake BBQ Festival, hosted by the Rotary Club of North Cobb, takes place May 9-10 at Logan Farm Park in Acworth. This free event features BBQ competitions, including the "Lord of the Wings" on May 9 at 6 p.m. and the "People’s Choice BBQ" on May 10 at noon, with tickets available for tastings. Attendees can enjoy live music, a Kids’ Zone, a Beer Garden, and a Georgia Grown Gift Market. Reserved tables and VIP packages are available. Proceeds support the Rotary Club’s community initiatives. The county detected the unauthorized access on March 21, leading to several days of server downtime for security assessments. While the exact data stolen varies by individual, the county is offering identity theft protection and credit monitoring if needed. The FBI has been notified, and the investigation is ongoing. Cobb officials emphasized their commitment to data security and have begun notifying affected individuals, with further updates expected as the situation develops. STORY 5: 30 Years, 50 Vendors, Endless Flavor: Taste of Marietta Returns Sunday The 30th annual Taste of Marietta food festival takes place Sunday, April 27, at Marietta Square, expecting over 50,000 attendees. Featuring 50 local restaurants like Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q and Piastra, the event offers dishes priced from $2 to $10. Guests can enjoy live entertainment, a kids' alley, and vendor competitions for awards like "Tastiest Taste" and "Best Comfort Food." A new VIP lounge at Boxwood Social Hall offers air-conditioning, private restrooms, live music, and an open bar for $89. Admission is free, with road closures around the Square.
