About this listen
The trouble with secrets is that they never stay secret for long....
Annie Howarth is living an anxious life in an anxious town. Her mining community in South Yorkshire is feeling the pinch, and tensions are running high. Then a murdered girl is found on the moors and the agitation in the community is pushed to a dangerous breaking point.
As the wife of the chief of police, Annie should feel safe - her husband, William, can be secretive, but she’s sure whatever he's hiding is for her own good, isn’t it?
But Annie is keeping her own secrets. Ten years ago, the man she loved was ripped from her life in a scandal that still haunts them both, and now his return will put her family, her marriage, even her life at risk.
Best-selling author of House by the Sea Louise Douglas returns with a heart-racing novel full of suspense, desire and desperate secrets. Perfect for fans of Barbara O’Neal, Lucinda Riley and Rachel Hore.

Story
Florence, the 1550s. Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and to devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding, Lucrezia is thrust into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must make her way in a court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

Disappointing
This one seemed rushed to me, as if the author just threw some words down on paper to meet a deadline. The story and characters could have been fleshed out a lot more, and the ending was extremely abrupt and left a lot to be desired. The worst part was that this book was more about the battle between the miners & the police; the murders were secondary.
*SPOILER ALERT*
The real villains never even got punished for their crimes, and there was no happily ever after to redeem the rest of this drivel.
I'm very disappointed because I was really starting to enjoy this author. If this is your first Louise Douglas novel, skip it and start with something else first. I recommend The Secret by the Lake.

A waste of time
Cliffhanger ending, tedious and repetitive dialogue including mental. With a simple plot easily unraveled in the beginning and a protagonist whose life is still in the 90’s. Not very interesting but the narrator did a good job.
