About this listen

She’s the one that got away. He’s the one that never let her go.

From the bestselling author of Done and Dusted and Swift and Saddled, the next book in the Rebel Blue Ranch series, a small-town romance in which past lovers get a second chance to rediscover what they lost

“The perfect farewell . . . I dare you to get to the last page without turning right back around to walk through the gates of Rebel Blue all over again. I’ll see you there.”—Jessica Joyce, USA Today bestselling author of The Ex Vows

Camille Ashwood had always loved a plan. Her latest was her best yet. She was going to get married so she could secure her daughter’s future, get her overbearing parents off her back, and finally start building her own life in small-town Meadowlark, Wyoming. Easy, right?

But when her groom doesn’t show up to the wedding, Cam’s life is turned upside down—she doesn’t even have a place to live. That is until she finds out the house she’s loved since high school is available to rent. There’s only one problem: the neighbor.

Dusty Tucker has spent nearly all of his adult life running. Running from what, though? More like who: Cam Ashwood. But ever since he returned home last year, the girl who was his first, well, everything has become a woman seemingly determined to keep him at arm’s length. And he was okay with that—at least, that’s what he kept telling himself. She was getting married, after all. But now she’s single and living next door. Dusty wants to show her that they can be friends, and that he can stay put.

Despite her best attempts to stay far away from Dusty Tucker, Cam realizes that being close to him is like slipping into her favorite jeans. Easy. Comfortable. That is until past wounds start to open and feelings—both old and new—wreak havoc. Nearly ten years after they first met, Dusty and Cam begin to wonder if their first love can also be their last. And this time, will it be forever?

Critic reviews

“Lyla Sage came galloping into the romance genre with enough wit, soul and spice to launch a thousand happily ever afters. Wild and Wrangled is no exception. As perfect a second chance romance and yearning-palooza that has ever existed. The Rebel Blue Ranch Series is a must read.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey

“A beautiful, comforting, and wildly satisfying end to our beloved Rebel Blue! This book is as tender as it gets while also serving up the hottest, down bad cowboy I’ve ever read!”—Sarah Adams, New York Times bestselling author of The Rule Book

Wild and Wrangled is the perfect farewell to the Rebel Blue Ranch series. Dusty and Cam’s story shines with what I love so much about Lyla Sage’s world: It’s comforting and soft, filled with hot cowboys (important), and it serves as a reminder that home will always be there waiting for you when you’re ready to go back. I dare you to get to the last page without turning right back around to walk through the gates of Rebel Blue all over again. I’ll see you there.”—Jessica Joyce, USA Today bestselling author of The Ex Vows

Editorial Review

An anticipated but bittersweet goodbye
I spent the holidays last year falling in love with the Rebel Blue Ranch series. From the moment I learned that Cam and Dusty had history, I knew their story would be something special, and Wild and Wrangled did not disappoint. Author Lyla Sage delivers an achingly heartfelt conclusion to the series with a second-chance romance that is as tender as it is tumultuous. Camille Ashwood had a plan for everything, but when her carefully constructed future crumbles, she finds herself starting over, living next door to Dusty Tucker, the man she’s spent years trying to forget. But Dusty never forgot her. As old wounds resurface and feelings she swore were long buried come rushing back, Cam is forced to confront the past she ran from and the love that never really left. With cameos from my RBR favorites and a romance filled with longing, heartbreak, and undeniable chemistry, this final installment is one I savored from beginning to end. —Patty R., Audible Editor

Disappointed

3 stars – A disappointing series finale that never quite wrangled my heart.

Lyla Sage, please don’t read this because I still love your books but this was not it. I’ve loved the previous books in this series and was so hyped to dive into Wild and Wrangled, and it was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025. But unfortunately… this finale didn’t hit with the same magic as the others. I was left feeling underwhelmed, confused, and honestly just a little sad that the series ended with a thump instead of a bang.

Let’s start with what I was excited about: Dusty and Cam. Their cameos in the earlier books? Iconic. Their dynamic? Electric. I was ready for the emotional punch of a good second chance romance with all the longing, tension, and redemption. Instead, I spent 70% of this book trying to figure out why they were avoiding each other so much when… they were both clearly crushing hard and very much single, and there were truly no obstacles in the way. There was zero logical reason for the level of avoidance and angst we got.

And maybe that could’ve worked, if there was more actual chemistry between them in the present. But that’s the thing: I didn’t feel it. The flashbacks to their teen romance were sweet and definitely evoked some real feelings, but present day Cam and Dusty? It felt flat. Cam especially felt closed off and contradictory. She would act hurt or angry and I’d find myself thinking, “Wait, where is this even coming from?” The emotional beats didn’t feel earned.

Let’s talk about Cam for a second… because I wanted to root for her, I really did. But she came off as so emotionally unavailable and frustratingly guarded to the point where I started to wonder why Dusty was even trying so hard. She was actually unlikeable. She pushed him away constantly, ran from her feelings, and never really grew or took accountability. And what bothered me most? Everyone around her pressuring her to give Dusty another chance, but then acting like, “Well, now that you’re back with him, you have to make it work.” It felt a little like she was gaslit into the relationship, and when the third act conflict hit (which was honestly ridiculous), I found myself sympathizing more with Dusty than Cam… and I never say that about the guy in a romance.

Dusty, bless his heart, was the highlight of this book. Flirty, easygoing, and so patient, he gave Cam every opportunity to meet him halfway. He communicated, he was vulnerable, and he deserved so much better than the cold shoulder he kept getting. His longing for her was probably the most compelling part of the book, but even that wasn’t quite enough to carry the story.

And okay, this might be petty… but the pet name “angel”? I hated it. Just like I hated “sugar” in the first book. I know Lyla Sage loves her sweet, Southern style pet names, but they really take me out of the moment. They just don’t hit for me, personally.

Plot wise… I don’t even know what to say. If someone asked me what this book was about, I guess I’d say it’s about a woman getting dumped at the altar and finding her way back to her high school sweetheart. But if someone asked me what happened? I couldn’t tell you. It was mostly a cycle of: Cam’s scared, Dusty’s confused, they fight, and then suddenly they’re back together. Rinse and repeat. There was so little happening outside of their back and forth that the story started to drag hard around the halfway point.

There were no meaningful subplots to give the romance some breathing room. Cam’s relationship with her parents was barely touched on, despite having the potential to offer some real depth. Her role as a mom also felt like an afterthought and Riley barely shows up in the book. And don’t even get me started on the lack of resolution around why Dusty left in the first place. Fifteen years of world travel and tattoos and we get no explanation? It all felt surface level, like we were missing the real “why” behind both of their characters.

I will say the first flashback chapter was probably my favorite part. It showed this instant, youthful connection between Cam and Dusty that made me feel something. I just wish that spark had carried through to the present day chapters. But instead of fiery chemistry, we got a lukewarm, repetitive emotional loop.

Also… I can’t shake the feeling that this book was rushed to meet a deadline. The pacing was uneven, there wasn’t enough time to develop the side characters or deepen the plot, and the resolution felt way too fast and unearned. The third act breakup was eye roll worthy, and it didn’t even get a satisfying payoff. There was no catharsis, just more “Cam is scared and Dusty loves her anyway” with little to no communication in between.

And I hate to say this, but this was one of the most tedious second chance romances I’ve read in a long time. I kept zoning out, bored, and waiting for something to actually happen.

Overall? I’m just really bummed. Wild and Wrangled had all the ingredients of a good small town second chance romance, but none of them were fully cooked. I still think some readers will love this one, especially diehard second chance fans, and fans of this series, but it just wasn’t for me. I’ll always check out what Lyla Sage writes next because she has real talent, but this one just didn’t rope me in. 🐎💔

She saved the best for last♥️

I’m so sad this series is officially over but that being said, I loved every chapter of this book! Proof that love really can stand the test of time and that when people are made for each other, nothing can stop the love that they share🫶🏻

Perfection

Lyla Sage… my goodness what a beautiful book and ending for the rebel blue ranch series. I loved the character development with the flashbacks, witty banter and tension. The narrators did such a wonderful job! I was crying within the first 5 chapters. I can’t wait for what comes next from Lyla!

Great plot, great characters, and an amazing performance.

I love this book. I thought the voice actors were perfect for both of their characters. I cannot recommend this book. It is so good. It has a perfect plot, great characters, and the perfect amount of spiciness. And I also love that we got some updates on our favorite characters.

Great Audio!!

The narration was outstanding! Connor Crais is rapidly becoming one of my favorite narrators. I felt as though they truly brought each character to life, conveying their depth and emotions flawlessly.

I have a feeling I might be alone in my opinion, but this final installment in the series was my least favorite. While Lyla Sage's storytelling and writing were truly exceptional, I found it challenging to engage with the plot. It was hard to accept that Dusty waited so long for Cam, particularly when it appeared she had moved on with her life, and Cam seemed quite selfish about a house that wasn’t even hers. I definitely felt the strongest connection to Dusty, who struck me as the most mature and likable character in this story.

WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED

This is my all time favorite cowboy romance!!! ALL TIME FAVORITE!! Dusty Tucker is everything… all the little things I love about a good MMC all wrapped up in a beautiful tatted blonde cowboy. I don’t even like second chance romances…. But oh my gosh. When done right?????! This is her best book yet 😭

Read this so quickly and it warmed my heart. I have been waiting for Cam's story. It was worth the wait. Such a lovely story of second chance love.

Cam sucks

Dusty is great. Cam character was nothing like I thought she would be. She was a mediocre mom and more shallow then I predicted her to be! I agree with the other review dusty deserves better!
