About this listen

On the cusp of her first London season, Miss Madeline Gracechurch was shy, pretty, and talented with a drawing pencil but hopelessly awkward with gentlemen. She was certain to be a dismal failure on the London marriage mart. So Maddie did what generations of shy, awkward young ladies have done: She invented a sweetheart.

A Scottish sweetheart. One who was handsome and honorable and devoted to her but conveniently never around. Maddie poured her heart into writing the imaginary Captain MacKenzie letter after letter...and by pretending to be devastated when he was (not really) killed in battle, she managed to avoid the pressures of London society entirely.

Until years later, when this kilted Highland lover of her imaginings shows up in the flesh. The real Captain Logan MacKenzie arrives on her doorstep - handsome as anything, but not entirely honorable. He's wounded, jaded, in possession of her letters...and ready to make good on every promise Maddie never expected to keep.

Laughed so much while listening to this book. I walked while listening and was worried someone would see me and wonder if I was crazy. Witty bander between hero and heroine was delightful. Tessa Dare is one of my favorite romance writers and this is in my top 5 of all time best romance books I've read/listened to. Narrator was wonderful.

What a delight and lobsters too!!!

This is a sweet, sexy, emotional story. The ending had me blubbering! Love it!

First book I’ve listened to Carmen Rose narrate. She has a nice, husky voice. To me, she sounds like a cross between Rosalyn Landon and Justine Eyre. Excellent!

A wonderful romance — thank you!

Fun premise, all the feels!

Loved this book could hardly stop listening——actually - I didn’t ! Spell bound til the end. I’ve enjoyed the Scottish themed books always, but this one is fun and entertaining.. going to follow Tessa Dare for a long while I think! Thank you!

You know when you were in middle school and everyone claimed to have some internet boyfriend who lived in Canada? This is like the Regency version of that, but then years later he turns out to be real. I adore this book and it's a go to when I want a good rom-com. Anything by Tessa Dare will be gold, but this is one of my favorites.
Maddy is practically agoraphobic levels of "shy" so to avoid a London season she claimed to have met and become engaged to a handsome man while on vacation. Why cant you meet him? Well he lives far away...in Scotland...but he's a soldier and he's gone to war...so that's why. To keep up the rouse Maddy sends tons of letters to her imaginary beau expecting the letters to have gone to the dead letter office since their recipient is fictional, but it turns out it wasn't too far fetched to guess the name she made up actually matched a Scottish soldier off fighting Napoleon. Captain Logan Mackenzie shows up one day ready to actually marry Maddy and a truly fun romp ensues.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. The Scottish accents are the cherry on top of a great read.

I totally have a non-fictional Canadian boyfriend.

I most definitely will recommend this book to a friend. This book caught my attention with its humor and imagination. I found myself laughing at Maddie’s situation and excited to see where the story leads her. I think I loved Maddie’s imaginary Captain the most in this story. Her letters she wrote, kept me turning the page to see what else she would confess to her perfect Captain. When the Captain appeared, he did not disappoint. All around I loved this story. This was my first book with this narrator and I have found myself seeking books she is narrating to hear her again. She defiantly did not disappoint and made the story all more enjoyable.

A must read

This book is hilarious!!!!! I loved it!! She is witty. I love how she didn’t just do as he said. She had self control. I love how it showed her curiosity.

I don't know where to start. I love the awkward, nerd Madeline, her character read original without "not like other girls" vibes.

All along the way, it was funny and amusing in an adorable way, without reading as a comedy. I loved the easy teasing and banter. It was emotional and moving, with tension, without reading to heavy.

I found myself giggling all through with out second hand embarrassment that often comes with humor in romance.

However, if I had the ability to give it 4.5 stars, I would only because there were several tiny details I could knit pick. For example, she kept saying "corset," which wasn't what it was called, and the usually didn't even resemble what we think of corsets today. They wore short stay, which couldn't be laced tight or even snugly. Their main purpose was support, not shaping.

but in the end, the story experience as a whole was so wonderful that things like that didn't detract too much.

I can't say in one phrase how wonderful this was!

Beautifully read, wonderful story, engaging characters with unique personalities, and breathless romance. Didn’t want it to end.

The romance! The originality!

Tessa Dare again blows the story away. characters are REAL. The story is of course steamy , with comedy relief and a great story line . Carmen Rose... her voice with the accent and Scott's Burr move the story along so well you cannot turn it he story off.

Dare and Rose awesome duo
