About this listen

One of the most popular writers of paranormal fiction and the number-one New York Times best-selling author returns with a rollicking new novel in her Otherworld series.

At 21, Savannah Levine - orphaned daughter of a notorious dark witch and an equally notorious cutthroat sorcerer - considers herself a full-fledged member of the otherworld. The once rebellious teen has grown into a six-foot-tall, motorcycle-riding jaw-dropper, with an impressive knowledge of and ability to perform spells.

The only problem is, she's having a hard time convincing her adoptive parents, Paige and Lucas, to take her seriously as an adult. She's working as the research assistant at the detective agency they founded, and when they take off on a romantic vacation alone, leaving her in charge, Savannah finds herself itching for a case to call her own. (She's also itching for Adam, her longtime friend and colleague, to see her as more than just a little girl, but that's another matter.)

Suddenly, Savannah gets the chance she's been waiting for: Recruited by another supernatural detective, she travels to Columbus, Washington, a small, dying town. Two troubled young women have been found in an abandoned warehouse, murdered. Now a third woman's dead, and on closer inspection small details point to darker forces at play. Savannah feels certain she can handle the case, but with signs of supernatural activity appearing at every turn, things quickly become more serious - and far more dangerous - than she realizes.

Critic reviews

"Armstrong skillfully juggles her twisty plot, weaving in characters from previous novels as she builds to a fast-paced conclusion. This supernatural mystery is unabashedly aimed at fans of Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer, and may well hit the mark." ( Publishers Weekly)

Tired of listening to stories about humans? Consider the werewolf! Taking various forms over the course of centuries and mythologies, often as flesh-devourers, werewolves now commonly appear in fantasy and romance novels as shape-shifters. The shape-shifting element in werewolves' stories has almost humanized them, depicting the internal struggles we all face within ourselves, on some level or another.

I have read the entire series. My favorite is BITTEN and FROSTBITTEN but I love them all. I didn't like Savannah Levine very much in the earlier books, she was such a snot. However, grown up Savannah is awesome. I loved this book, as I loved all of Kelleys books. Do yourself a favor, read all her books in this series from the beginning to end. Awesome!

Another great book by Kelley Armstrong!

So glad this book is out, I really wanted to hear what a grown up Savannah has to say. I love this series and this book doesn't disappoint.

Oh I love adult Savannah! She is still young and a little bratty but I loved how she just wants to prove she is no longer a child. She did a great job with her first investigation and I loved how we get to see her softer side a little with friendships and kids. I missed Adam through most of the book and was happy when he finally came to help.

The narration is good but I'll be honest I kept thinking about Sookie Stackhouse ;)

I really enjoyed this book, anxiously now waiting for next in series. The ending is really a cliff hanger. Now I have to wait patiently for next book in series. First time I have read a book with quite and abrupt unfinished ending.

Anxiously awaiting for book 12 in Series

The story was ok, but for a series that has never had this type of ending before this cliffhanger was really annoying.

Alright, we are on book 11 and this series is going strong. Of particular note is the strong plot. I have to admit, I did not guess what was going to happen in this latest installment by Armstrong. This novel is the first one to center in Savannah where she is the clear protagonist/hero of the story. We are getting a very much humanized (pardon the irony) view of her personality and the changes which differential her from Paige and her mother Eve.

This book has absolutely no sex in it and is really all about character development and interaction and the deepening complexion Savannah's thinking. One key in a novel such as this is how complex the characters are and how they interact -- and it is excellent in this installment. This novel is all about the complex interactions of the small group of characters. Paige and Lucas are on vacation we see a little of Adam.

If you are a fan other series you are really going to like this one. My recommendation -- start listening immediately.

Outstanding Plot and Theme

What made the experience of listening to Waking the Witch the most enjoyable?

This was well in the standard of Kelly Armstrong and the performance by Johanna Parker was great! She is the best at what she does. Anything read by her is like watching a movie with your eyes closed. You can picture every character as the author meant for them to be.I have many of the otherworld books but read by Johanna Parker makes them better.

Great Story Best Narrator

The little girl who has been in the background of the Otherworld series has now stepped out on her own.

While she struggles with her first 'solo' case, she shows that she is her own woman.

Thank you Kelley Armstrong for another strong woman with her own personal snark!
