About this listen

Casey Duncan is a homicide detective with a secret: When she was in college, she killed a man. She was never caught, but he was the grandson of a mobster, and she knows that someday this crime will catch up to her.

Casey's best friend, Diana, is on the run from a violent, abusive ex-husband. When Diana's husband finds her, and Casey herself is attacked shortly after, Casey knows it's time for the two of them to disappear again.

Diana has heard of a town made for people like her, a town that takes in people on the run who want to shed their old lives. You must apply to live in Rockton, and if you're accepted it means walking away entirely from your old life and living off the grid in the wilds of Canada: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, no computers, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval.

As a murderer Casey isn't a good candidate, but she has something they want: She's a homicide detective, and Rockton has just had its first real murder. She and Diana are in. However, soon after arriving, Casey realizes that the identity of a murderer isn't the only secret Rockton is hiding - in fact she starts to wonder if she and Diana might be in even more danger in Rockton than they were in their old lives.

An edgy, gripping crime audiobook from best-selling urban fantasy writer Kelley Armstrong, City of the Lost boldly announces a major new player in the crime fiction world.

I wouldn't want to live here!

This is a very good book, Very interesting concept. The story revolves around a town (Rockton) in the middle of nowhere. It's a town for people trying to escape their past and start over.
The protagonist (Casey) and her best friend pay for the privilege of moving there. Prior to their move, Casey was a detective. It seems the town of Stockton is in need of one, there's a serial killer on the loose and no one is safe.
Don't ask me why (as if anyone could) but I kept thinking this book was a combination of the movie BOYS TOWN with Spencer Tracy (It was about a town for "wayward " boys ) and Blake Crouch's book PINES, where people who could contribute to a new town in the future were brought. Although the majority of the people living in Rockton have checkered pasts and would probably not be on a save for the next generation list, many have worthwhile skills.
If will be getting the next book in the series A DARKNESS ABSOLUTE. This is an entertaining book and I would like to see where the author is going with the characters.
Therese Plummer does an outstanding job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Fantastic and scary

Where does City of the Lost rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's very near the top. The narration was fantastic and the story gripping. I couldn't stop listening!

What did you like best about this story?

The atmosphere was haunting and oppressive, Armstrong really has a knack for creating the perfect setting. The characters were also great!

Have you listened to any of Therese Plummer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this was the first book narrated by Therese Plummer I've ever listened to. I can't wait to try more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This question is really impossible to answer without spoiling the story, so I'll skip it.

Loved it!

I signed up to Audible 17 years ago and have listened to many books since then. I was a little iffy about getting this, but it held my interest all the way through. The plot is very exciting, if gruesome in parts. Therese Plummer is the perfect narrator for Casey's voice. The characters are very well developed and Casey is very relatable. There is a lot of cursing, especially from the sheriff, but it doesn’t seem offensive in this context. When I get my next credits, I'll buy the next two in the series.
Since listening to the rest of the series so far (3 books after this one), I still love them and am anxious to hear the next one, coming out early in 2020. This series isn’t for everyone, but I have really enjoyed them.
