About this listen

This vivacious personal story captures the heart and soul of modern Iceland. Born in Reykjavik on the eve of the Second World War, Sverrir Sigurdsson watched Allied troops invade his country and turn it into a bulwark against Hitler’s advance toward North America. The country’s post-war transformation from an obscure, dirt-poor nation to a prosperous one became every Icelander’s success. Spurred by this favorable wind, Sverrir answered the call of his Viking forefathers, setting off on a voyage that took him around the world. Join him on his roaring adventures! Europe Scandinavia War

Really liked second half

The first half dragged for me, but once he got involved with globe trotting, it became quite interesting. I learned a lot of stuff about the World Bank. I knew there was one, but had no idea what it did.

AI narrator did a pretty good job. Was frustrated when he read the captions for photos we obviously can’t see on Audible. The chapter about Poland had a problem. There’s Polish stuff in Poland. People, language, officials etc. Narrator never said Polish. It was always polish like shoe polish or furniture polish. Had to hear it a couple of times to realize that polish should have been Polish.
