About this listen

She did not want to go to Italy and marry a man she had not seen in twelve years. Her father had arranged this union with old friends back in Acerno. Had he consulted with her? Had he sought her approval of the plan? Of course not, it was 1888 and he believed he was responsible for seeing to the future of his daughter. Did Veronica have a choice? She had no independent means. It was too late to run away like her sister, Anna, too late to find a rancher out in Wyoming who was looking for a bride. Now she was on a train headed to New York City, the port of departure, the port from which she would take a steamship to Naples. So began Veronica’s Odyssey, a series of adventures complete with uncertainty and twists and turns. What seemed like a settled future was filled with new hope, possibilities she never imagined possible.
Who did Veronica meet on the train? Mark O’Brien, the brother of her sister Anna’s best friend, Callie. They make the connection and like lightning in a jar, the sparks of attraction fly. Infatuation grows to obsession and Mark takes a bold step after they arrive in New York City.
“Don’t go to Italy. Go Back to Cincinnati and give me a chance to win your heart.”
The notion had great appeal until Veronica learned more about him. He worked for Union Pacific and was riding a train five nights out of seven. If they found love her husband would be gone most of the time. What about security, family and a home? This was not a life she could accept.
Ah, but this was only the beginning of a series of events that would throw her future into the wind.
