About this listen
In a world that preaches a "try harder" gospel-just keep going, keep hustling, keep pretending we're all fine-we're left exhausted, overwhelmed, and so numb to our lives. If we're honest, we've been overfunctioning for so long, we can't even imagine another way. How else will things get done? How else will we survive?
It doesn't have to be this way. Aundi Kolber believes that we don't have to white-knuckle our way through life. In her debut book, Try Softer, she'll show us how God specifically designed our bodies and minds to work together to process our stories and work through obstacles. Through the latest psychology, practical clinical exercises, and her own personal story, Aundi equips and empowers us to connect us to our truest self and truly live. This is the "try softer" life.
In Try Softer, you'll learn how to: know and set emotional and relational boundaries; make sense of the difficult experiences you've had; identify your attachment style-and how that affects your relationships today; move through emotions rather than get stuck by them; and grow in self-compassion and talk back to your inner critic. Trying softer is sacred work. And while it won't be perfect or easy, it will be worth it. Because this is what we were made for: a living, breathing, moving, feeling, connected, beautifully incarnational life.

We're all infected with a spiritual disease. Its name is shame. Whether we realize it or not, shame affects every aspect of our personal lives and vocational endeavors. It seeks to destroy our identity in Christ, replacing it with a damaged version of ourselves that results in unhealed pain and brokenness. But God is telling a different story for your life. Psychiatrist Curt Thompson unpacks the soul of shame, revealing its ubiquitous nature and neurobiological roots. He also provides the theological and practical tools necessary to dismantle shame.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

The Lord is My Courage is for the deconstructing and the dreamers, the afraid and the amazed, for those whose fear has not been fully shepherded but who can't seem to stop listening for their Good Shepherd's Voice.

Story
Brain research has found that our thoughts and beliefs affect our physical, mental and spiritual health. Mind and body are interrelated, and we are designed for healthy relationships of love and trust. When we understand God as good and loving, we flourish. Unfortunately, many of us have distorted images of God and mostly think of him in fearful, punitive ways. This leads us into unhealthy patterns of self-defeating behaviors and toxic relationships. But our lives can change when God renews our minds with a truer picture of him.

Story
Eugene H. Peterson considers all the ways that Jesus is the Way compared to the distorted ways the modern American church has chosen to follow. Arguing that the way Jesus leads and the way we follow are symbiotic, Peterson begins with an extensive study of how the ways of those who came before Christ - Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah of Jerusalem, and Isaiah of the Exile - revealed and prepared the "way of the Lord" that became complete in Jesus.

Drawing on her own experience with depression, Gruver offers a wealth of practical wisdom both for those in the darkness and those who care for them.

Story
Trusting God. It's such a cliche. Yet nothing means more to our heavenly Father than when we surrender our lives completely to him and choose to believe he has our best in mind. David modeled that kind of deliberate dependence: as a shepherd boy, as a man running for his life, as a king who made grave mistakes. In both triumph and failure, David looked to God rather than to himself. In Embracing Trust, Joanna Weaver, bestselling author of the runaway hit Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, shares personal stories, practical tips, and life-changing principles gleaned from Scripture.

so eye-opening!!
it is my favorite when the book is actually read by its author. Being able to hear the spirit behind the voice of this author made this book extremely powerful to me. the insights and well explained dynamics of a trauma-informed approach to trying softer has enabled me to take practical steps towards that in my own life. I recommend this for everybody, especially those in any sort of leadership position, including and maybe especially parents.

What a gift this book is!
As a counselor in training this book could not have been listened to at a better time. Aundi uncovers practical wisdom from a Christian and clinical perspective that is applicable for all! I’ve learned so much about myself and my future profession. This to date is a favorite book of mine and I’m so thankful I came across it from listening to my podcasts!

Concise and complete!
I have just completed listening to this audiobook for the second time. This is the most helpful book about trauma recovery that I have read. Aundi’s gentle, soothing voice made me feel safe. She presented the information in a clear way that helped my understanding of the trauma I have experienced. I learned a lot of new things, and I had a lot of things I already knew confirmed. I believe that God pointed me to this book at this point in my life. I’m in my 60s and have had a lot of healing, but this book has opened me up for much more. Thank you!

Such a helpful book and tool!! She was so insightful and it was right on time!!!
Such a helpful book and tool!! She was so insightful and the delivery was really good too.
I’m definitely learning that U can only white-knuckle it but for so long … you can’t just grit your teeth & bare it forever.
Throughout my life, I definitely lived by the “try harder” mantra; I accepted my difficulties and trauma & dealt w/ it in a determined manner; it was pretty effective when I was younger and worked well all the way up until my early 30s!!!
My sisters and I had to grit our teeth & bare with our circumstances because we had no other choice, but as I moved into my 30s, I could no longer “white-knuckle” it, so thank you for this labor of love; it was right on time!!

A book that will stay on my reread shelf for years
I’ve been recommending this book to every person I know well enough since the second chapter.
As a 20-something who wants to learn to carry grief and heartache of my past well, this was recommended to me by a mentor and I couldn’t be happier.
For anyone who has ever been through any kind of Trauma, or if you are wanting to understand the science behind it all,
Aundi does an amazing job of informing the reader of the science in the way we were created while carrying us to the cross. She does not sacrifice faith for science or vice versa, for truly if He is Creator than our bodies and minds should point us to Him. And that’s what she does.
The author narrates it herself which is what sold me on getting audiobook vs the paperback, and she does so with a voice that is extremely soft & soothing even while bringing up difficult memories or handling sensitive topics.
There’s a companion workbook that is on its way in the mail now that I will be using to go through a second time. It’s worth that and more.
I will likely be reading this book for years to come. Very blessed by her obedience to God.
