About this listen

Legendary Navajo policeman Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn takes center stage in this riveting, atmospheric mystery from New York Times best-selling author Anne Hillerman that combines crime, superstition, and tradition and brings the desert Southwest vividly alive.

Joe Leaphorn may have retired from the Tribal Police, but he finds himself knee-deep in a perplexing case involving a priceless artifact - a reminder of a dark time in Navajo history. Joe’s been hired to find a missing biil, a traditional dress that had been donated to the Navajo Nation. His investigation takes a sinister turn when the leading suspect dies under mysterious circumstances and Leaphorn himself receives anonymous warnings to beware - witchcraft is afoot.

While the veteran detective is busy working to untangle his strange case, his former colleague Jim Chee and Officer Bernie Manuelito are collecting evidence they hope will lead to a cunning criminal behind a rash of burglaries. Their case takes a complicated turn when Bernie finds a body near a popular running trail. The situation grows more complicated when the death is ruled a homicide, and the Tribal cops are thrust into a turf battle because the murder involves the FBI.

As Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernie draw closer to solving these crimes, their parallel investigations begin to merge...and offer an unexpected opportunity that opens a new chapter in Bernie’s life.

What listeners say about The Tale Teller

Highly rated for:

The Audiobook Continues The Popular Leaphorn And Chee Mystery Series Set In The Navajo Nation, With Anne Hillerman Taking Over From Her Father Tony Hillerman. Many Reviewers Praise The Engaging Mysteries, Interwoven Plotlines, Complex Characters, And Vivid Descriptions Of The Southwestern Landscape And Navajo Culture. However, Some Criticize The Convoluted Plots, Abrupt Resolutions, Underdeveloped Characters, Weak Storytelling Compared To The Original Novels, And Unsatisfying Endings. Overall, The Book Seems To Offer An Enjoyable Continuation Of The Series For Fans, Though Opinions Vary On How It Measures Up To The Previous Books.

Amazing!

Ms. Hillerman is a master storyteller, a 'tale teller' in her own right. She has her father's gift with her own flavor. It is always a joy to read a new novel by her, or in this case listen to a masterful narration.

The storyteller legacy continues and grows

One of the best stories yet. Multiple, complex and intertwined plots like rope strands. Excellent.

Good job Anne!

I have been a big fan of the Tony Hillerman books. Was excited to see his daughter has picked up the story and kept it going. I have listen to all 5 of her books so far (2019) and enjoyed them all.

If you are looking for a carbon copy of Tony then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for more mysteries with familiar characters in Navajo land then this will suit you fine. To call Anne’s books a Leaphorn series is a stretch. It’s more like the Manuleto series and I’m okay with that. Berni is a great character and deserves some spotlight. I enjoy the deeper dive into her and Chee’s life as a married police couple.

Christina Delaine’s narration improved as the series progressed. She has a good range of voices and it’s easy to identify each character. Many complained about her men’s voices but she has gotten better. I enjoy her narration and hope it continues.

Dialogue and voices

I’m marveling at the choice of narrator and her genius at interpreting Anne Hillerman’s brilliant story, scenes, and characters. Not once was I jolted from the world Hillerman created by a word or pause or false note. The performance perfectly portrayed my own sense of each character. I hope Audible has more of her work.

Too many plots, last-second finish

The author still writes too many disparate plot lines and carries them all through the entire book, only to suddenly tie them all together at once in the final pages with hand-waving and magic. My recommendation is to put more work into the writing so the book is actually shorter, rely less on multiple plots, and show the reader how the mysteries are solved rather than simply writing them off in the finish. She also lacks her father’s ability to write evocative passages about the landscape, weather phenomena, and Navajo culture, but I fear that will remain constant. The reader has improved vastly since her first attempt at reading these books.
