About this listen
A timely guide on how to make the most of your life when there’s nothing to do (whether by choice or not) - niksen is the new Dutch philosophy teaching us how to rest and relax.
“The best thing about niksen is the absence of a goal. It doesn’t serve a purpose, but it’s wonderful.”
Don’t you think it’s time for a break? Plagued - as we are! - by nonstop pings and notifications, we have lost the knack of zoning out. Kicking back. Slacking off. Even when pandemic-induced lockdowns forcibly cleared our calendars, many who thought I’m free! filled their days with Netflix and doomscrolling. How can we reclaim our free time (planned or not) to truly rest and reset?
The Dutch have it figured out: with niksen. Perhaps their best-kept lifestyle secret, niksen is the art of doing, well, nothing. It’s the opposite of productivity, and it’s incredibly good for your:
- Mind - It makes you calmer.
- Body - It offers rest on hectic days.
- Creativity - It clears a space for brilliant ideas, and
- Wallet - It’s free!
If you’re waiting for an invitation to go lie down in the sunshine, this book is it.

Story
In Do Nothing, award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee illuminates a new path ahead, seeking to institute a global shift in our thinking so we can stop sabotaging our well-being, put work aside, and start living instead of doing. As it turns out, we’re searching for external solutions to an internal problem. We won’t find what we’re searching for in punishing diets, productivity apps, or the latest self-improvement schemes. Yet all is not lost - we just need to learn how to take time for ourselves, without agenda or profit, and redefine what is truly worthwhile.

How do we make and keep friends in an era of distraction, burnout, and chaos, especially in a society that often prizes romantic love at the expense of other relationships? In Platonic, Dr. Marisa G. Franco unpacks the latest, often counterintuitive findings about the bonds between us—for example, why your friends aren’t texting you back (it’s not because they hate you!), and the myth of “friendships happening organically” (making friends, like cultivating any relationship, requires effort!).

Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

She loves me. She loves me not. I’m not good enough. What’s the use. Why does everything happen to me? These are the words of the chronic over-thinker - or more specifically, these are the words of the voices in their head. Like any other affliction, there is a cure! It will only require a careful examination of your habits. A small price to pay for the pervasive haunting of your mind. How many times have you caught yourself lying in bed, watching TV, scrolling your phone, or just chilling and doing nothing? Trust me. I know how it feels like. Often, it looks like you want to do something, but your body just doesn’t respond, and at the end of the day, you start your mental self-destruction process because you haven’t done anything productive - and that is the first stage of super-laziness most people have to overcome.

A good evening read!
A good book to relax to or listen to in the morning. Gives good insight on different cultures and ways to ease our days.
Only critiques I really have are the random tangents that appear here and there that don’t correlate to the topic very well, and the outdated and very obviously millennial references.
Besides that, it is a useful read if you’re one who has a difficult time relaxing, overworking yourself, or feel guilty when focusing on yourself.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
