About this listen
Sloane Parker lives a small, contained life as a librarian in her small, contained town. She never thinks of herself as lonely...but still she looks forward to that time every day when old curmudgeon Arthur McLachlan comes to browse the shelves and cheerfully insult her. Their sparring is such a highlight of Sloane's day that when Arthur doesn't show up one morning, she's instantly concerned. And then another day passes, and another.
Anxious, Sloane tracks the old man down only to discover him all but bedridden...and desperately struggling to hide how happy he is to see her. Wanting to bring more cheer into Arthur's gloomy life, Sloane creates an impromptu book club. Slowly, the lonely misfits of their sleepy town begin to find each other and, in their book club, the joy of unlikely friendship—because, as it turns out, everyone has a special book in their heart...and a reason to get lost (and eventually found) within the pages.

The morning of January 12, 1888, was unusually mild, following a punishing cold spell. It was warm enough for the homesteaders of the Dakota Territory to venture out again and for their children to return to school without their heavy coats - leaving them unprepared when disaster struck. At the hour when most prairie schools were letting out for the day, a terrifying, fast-moving blizzard blew in without warning. Schoolteachers as young as 16 were suddenly faced with life-and-death decisions.

Thirty-one-year-old Charlie isn't in the mood for Christmas cheer. Her boyfriend has left her for his personal trainer, her mother has absconded with her latest husband for the holidays, and - adding insult to (literal) injury - her London apartment has just been destroyed by a gas leak. Single, mildly concussed, and temporarily homeless, Charlie realizes there's only one place to go: Cozy Canine Cottages, where she'll spend the season looking after her cousin Jez's doggy day care center. Julian Jessop, an eccentric, lonely artist and septuagenarian believes that most people aren’t really honest with each other. But what if they were? And so he writes—in a plain, green journal—the truth about his own life and leaves it in his local café. It’s run by the incredibly tidy and efficient Monica, who furtively adds her own entry and leaves the book in the wine bar across the street. Before long, the others who find the green notebook add the truths about their own deepest selves - and soon find each other In Real Life at Monica’s Café.

Almost gave up
I really did not like the narrator’s grumpy, grouchy voice. Other voices were ok. I almost couldn’t finish. I was moderately interested in how the story would end so I held on. I would say the story was almost enjoyable.

Horrible narrator.
Tried to like it, that narrator just had zero range. I couldn't tell who was saying what most of the time.

Charming Tale
I love a book about books and this a sweet story about people who find common ground through books. People struggling thru the human condition alone until they find one another. It was charming and an easy listen.
Narration was not my favorite. Readers narration and main characters voice were fine but her male voices were not strong and the grumpy main characters sounds like a cartoon character. But still worthy of a listen, or maybe a read.

Lovely story
Loved the story but the narrator is a horrible actor. It was almost impossible to figure out what character she portrayed. All of the characters sounded the same.

Unordinary book club
I loved the vast differences in age and personalities of this book club. Needs were brought to light and friendships old and new developed beyond first impressions that would never have been given the time of day. It was delightful.

Great story
I liked the arc of the story and the focus on Arthur, the elderly gentleman. I would have preferred if the narrator didn’t try to make accents for the characters. They were inconsistent and a bit annoying.
