About this listen

The author of the beloved international hit The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot returns with a funny, uplifting story about the power of friendship and finding love in unexpected places.

Eddie Winston is 90 years old. He has lived and he has loved, but he has never been kissed.

A true gentleman and incurable romantic, Eddie spends his days volunteering at a charity shop, where he sorts through the donations of the living and the dead, preserving letters and tokens of love along the way. And it is here that he meets Bella, a troubled young woman who, at 24 years old, has just lost the love of her life.

When Bella learns that Eddie is yet to have his first kiss, she resolves to help Eddie Winston finally find love, sparking an adventure that will take them to unexpected places and, they hope, bring Eddie Winston to the moment he has waited for all his life.

A tale of friendship and kindness that reminds us that those we love are never forgotten and it is never too late to try again.

The Sweetest Story

I loved everything about this book! Older people are portrayed as real people with feelings and interests and not as stereotypes. The inter generational friendship is heartwarming. The story is beautiful and perfectly paced. The narrators were outstanding!

Beautiful Story

I’m not someone who picks up a “romance book”, but this book was recommended, so I tried it. I couldn’t put it down! Beautiful story. One of those books that just makes you feel good and you don’t want it to end!

Heartwarming

This book was a selection for Brenda Novak's book club - the first book of 2025. Cronin is a new author to me and I would probably not have chosen this book to read.

Once I got into the book, it started slow, I fell in love with Eddie and Bella!

Second chances are possible

I loved the character Eddie Winston. 90 years old of living allows him the grace for taking home items dumped off at the charity shop for which he works where he puts them on his ‘Eddie shelf’. These aren’t valuable things, but things that Eddie knows they must’ve been valuable items for someone…before they died.
Eddie meets Bella, young enough to be a great-granddaughter and they become true friends and tell each other things they’ve never told a living soul.
This is such a sweet book, full of bittersweet love, looking for love, grieving lost love and longing for new love.
