About this listen
Emma Bloodworth once had a normal life - a loving husband and two children, a cat, a good job in the city - and she was happy. Then, for her, everything changed...as the world ended.
The earthquakes, the global floods, and the devastating fires arrived first. The human race, displaced and panicked, fled, migrating to any place there was food and shelter. Then the worldwide plague arrived with its waves of death. And as mankind suffered and died out, vampires, their numbers dwindling from the same sickness, struggled and fought fiercely among themselves to survive in a world where there weren’t enough humans left to feed upon.
As the months went by, the vampires become fewer, more desperate, and ruthless. Emma, as the world disintegrated around her, found herself alone...the old life she’d known gone, her family and friends all dead, and fighting off an unnatural hunger as she became one of the undead.
Defying her unwanted destiny, she was determined to resist the increasing bloodlust, the need to kill and feed on human blood, and of losing her humanity for as long as she could bear it. But she was so hungry, and in the night, the wolves called. And then she met Matthew and was no longer alone.... But could the love she felt for him protect him from her hunger? Could her love protect him from the other vampires?

Story
Abigail Sutton's beloved husband walks out one night, doesn't return, and two years later is found dead, a victim of a long ago crime. It's made her sympathetic to the missing and their families. Starting her new life, Abigail moves to small town and buys a fixer-upper house left empty when old Edna Summers died. Once it was also home to Edna's younger sister, Emily, and her two children, Jenny and Christopher, who, people believe, drove away one night, thirty years ago, and just never came back.

Thrilling from the first paragraph to the last.
Awesome book, with high octane action but with excellent pacing. Emma is a interesting and sympathetic character with real faults and believable desires. Matthew is rugged and reliable hero without action hero cheesiness.

Classic and ahead of its time
I never had the pleasure of reading the initial copy, I couldn't be happier for the re-release and translation into audiobook. Nila did a lovely job READING the book, but it was a little hard for me to get into character with her voicing Emma. I hope that makes sense.
Kathryn managed to avoid the pitfall of ending up as "Just another Vampire Romance" by not going overboard with sex or being tied to the standard vampire trope. I love this about this book. I also love the description of the cataclysm and that it boils down to our planet just being done with our sh!7.
This is a story of tragedy and loss and survival, but, most of all, it is a story of the perseverance of the human spirit to overcome adversity and holding fast to one's values when faced with the unimaginable. Well done.

Original, Apocalyptic Storytelling at its best
Original, Apocalyptic Storytelling at its best.
I have put off writing this review for weeks because I was so blown away by this incredible vampiric story. The reason is I went to go look for more books by this author only to find out this book was written 20+ years ago. My mind was blown. This book needs to read by anyone who is looking for an original apocalyptic story that happens to have a vampire story interwoven. It’s been weeks since I finished it and I still think about this story. That speaks to me about how great the writing, world-building and character development.
A heartfelt journey for survival for both humans and vampires losing their food source.
The Narrator was excellent.
Suffice to say this book has held me in its thrall.
***I received a free copy of this book in lieu of an honest review
I highly recommend this book and audiobook. This is one is to be reread.

Better than expected
There was few times I thought it was going to turn into some shifter sci-fi romance but thankfully it did not. There was few love scenes but didn’t get graphic . I ended up really enjoying the story and plan to look into more from the author. Narrator was ok but initially thought her voice was more suited for child’s bedtime stories. But it wasn’t bad voice and not cringing. I received this audiobook in exchange for honest voluntary review. And if vampires are your thing I would recommend tho honestly I thought it was more a werewolf story not really vampires.

Original, dark, depressing and OK Narration
4 Blue Roses
2 Blue Flames
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Narrator Nila Brereton Hagood gave an OK steady performance that draws out the tension and anticipation in this apocalyptic paranormal romance.
This audiobook was definitely original, dark, depressing and it left me hopeless. OMG, this was so EMO I can hardly believe I survived it.
I could not stop listening. I constantly hoped something good is going to happen. I was sucked into a funnel of survival of the fittest with a paranormal twist mixed into the apocalypse of all apocalypses. The world building was exceptionally good, I experienced the horrible survival of Emma step by step with her. The best scene for me was where she had to swim through the river. I felt how cold she was.
Mayday-mayday!
The ending is not HEA. It left me hands in the hair frustrated, wondering where the nearest tree branch, shower head, or any bloody fixture at least 6 feet high. But still, I'm optimistically confused, so I will definitely listen to book 2
If you are into the EMO shit, like Zombies meet Resident Evil and a sprinkle of Underworld, then I recommend this audiobook to you.
Happy Listening.
