About this listen

"The buzz...is real. I've read it and was blown away. It's a true nerve-shredder that keeps its mind-blowing secrets to the very end." (Stephen King)

Catriona Ward's The Last House on Needless Street is a shocking and immersive listen perfect for fans of Gone Girl and The Haunting of Hill House.

“The new face of literary dark fiction.” (Sarah Pinborough, New York Times best-selling author of Behind Her Eyes)

In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three.

A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time.

A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory.

And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible.

An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

“A chilling and beautiful masterpiece of suspense.” (Joe Hill, New York Times best-selling author of NOS4A2)

Olivia's meowing is annoying!

I understand author's intention to open a door into DID , but I'm not sure was a good idea to do it through a mystery novel. First half of the book was somehow boring and the narrator meowing very annoying . In the second half things started to move fast and close to the end you get confused, wondering if you understood it correct or if you missed something.
I honestly had moments when I told myself that something might be wrong with the author.
It's not a bad book, but by far too twisted for the typical mystery novel, and I would not recommend it unless you are looking for a headache.

Unlike Anything I've Heard

This book is an experience. You've never read or heard anything like it, I promise. Starts a little slow, but sinks its hooks in quick and firm. You think you understand what's going on, but trust me: you don't.

The narrator is absolutely perfect, too. I'll be looking for more books he's recorded!

In short: if you like mystery, horror, strangeness, psychology, or just a really outstanding performance of a one-of-a-kind novel— buy this one.
It's impossible to forget.

It was just ok

Could possibly have spoilers. The story was good for what it was but as the author says at the end of the book, he disguised the book as a horror story but it wasn’t. I was expecting horror but didn’t really get any of that. Was relatively disappointed. Like I said it was a good story but not what was advertised. Turned out to be more about mental illness than a horror story. It’s like biting into a chocolate chip cookie to find out it was a raisin cookie instead……meh. Performance was amazing though

No clue and no words

This book - no idea how to review it without spoiling the ending. For me, I had to listen to it in spurts to process each character’s POV. I’m glad I didn’t let the weirdness of the synopsis get in the way of selecting it. It’s unsettling and uncomfortable and genre defying. I floundered a to grasp what was going on in the beginning. Every time I thought I had something figured out I was hit with a curveball. The cat’s point of view works surprisingly well. I wouldn’t listen to it again but I would recommend it to those who are up for the challenge. There’s some intense trauma so research that aspect beforehand if needed.

One of my favorite reads this year!

This book kept me analyzing and trying to work out where the story was going was headed to the very end…and I love EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

I can’t say too much bc I don’t want to accidentally leak any spoilers, but I appreciate the thoughtful and intellectual approach this book took toward the way the mind preserves itself.

Not Really Horror, More a Rabbit hole!

NO SPOILERS! This book was very long winded. The cat reeds redescribing over and over was tedious. I thought I knew where the plot was going and when realized I was wrong I was disappointed.

I thought this was horror but really it is a psychological drama. The story was a just ok. The narrator was excellent but the cat meows were very annoying.

Interesting

Very interesting story. I listened to the whole book in 1.3x speed because it was read a bit too slow for me and I guessed most of the plot from about a third in, but regardless it was a good story. Kept my interest the whole time. The last chapter was a great addition to really understand the author’s perspective and motive for the book.

Give it a minute!! It’ll be worth it!

This book came highly recommended so I was looking forward to it. When it first started I thought “I wasted a credit on this?” It’s weird but give it time! You’ll be hooked!

This is NOT a Thriller

I don't write reviews but I do read them before picking a book to invest in, This book is NOT what other reviews are classifying it as and it really has very little to do with the picture on the cover. This is more of a drama/psychological story which is fine if you go into knowing that but they make it sound like this book is a thriller and it is not. This book is not "nerve shredding" by any means. There are very few books I can say I don't enjoy but this book is on that short list. The narrator is great though. He really does keep you going even when you really want to just turn it off.
