Now, Thurman guides you lucidly through the unifying principles of Tibetan Buddhism's many branches. Finally, here is Robert Thurman on audio, offering a rich and intellectually riveting retreat program, complete with many specific meditations and spiritual practices to fully immerse you in the mysteries of The Jewel Tree of Tibet. Story
The so-called Tibetan Book of the Dead has been renowned for centuries as a cornerstone of Buddhist wisdom and religious thought. More recently, it has become highly influential in the Western world for its psychological insights into the processes of death and dying - and what they can teach us about the ways we live our lives. It has also been found to be helpful in the grieving process by people who have recently lost their loved ones. This authoritative translation preserves the form and spirit of the original and was prepared especially for Western audiences.

Story
Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas - those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings.

Story
It is said that the practice of dream yoga deepens our awareness during all our experience: the dreams of the night; the dream-like experience of the day; and the bardo experiences after death. Indeed, the practice of dream yoga is a powerful tool of awakening, used for hundreds of years by the great masters of the Tibetan traditions. Unlike in the Western psychological approach to dreams, the ultimate goal of Tibetan dream yoga is the recognition of the nature of mind or enlightenment itself.

Robert Thurman illuminates the Tibetan Book of the Dead with up-to-date insights for modern audiences. For centuries, this text has been read aloud to the dying, who Buddhist masters say are capable of hearing up to three days after clinical death, as a guide through the tumultuous and often terrifying process of dissolution. Now, in Liberation Upon Hearing in the Between, Professor Robert Thurman demystifies this esoteric teaching and reveals the Tibetan view of dying.

Story
Spiritual disciplines often seem remote from the realities of our daily lives. Yet there is a Mahayana Scripture which presents a model of enlightened practice in the midst of urban living, the Vimalakirti Sutra. This teaches a non-dualistic wisdom and reconciliation of dichotomies. It challenges ordinariness and reveals systematic and effective ways of tapping higher potentials while upholding one's usual responsibilities and enriching long-term relationships.

Story
The Words of My Perfect Teacher is the classic commentary on the preliminary practices of the Longchen Nyingtig—one of the best-known cycles of teachings and a spiritual treasure of the Nyingmapa school—the oldest Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Patrul Rinpoche makes the technicalities of his subject accessible through a wealth of stories, quotations, and references to everyday life. His style of mixing broad colloquialisms, stringent irony, and poetry has all the life and atmosphere of an oral teaching.

Tantra Illuminated takes the listener on a fascinating journey to the very heart of original Tantra: its key teachings, foundational lineages, and transformative practices. Since the West's discovery of Tantra 100 years ago, there has been considerable fascination, speculation, and more than a little misinformation about this spiritual movement. Now, for the first time in the English language, Tantra Illuminated presents an accessible introduction to this sacred tradition that began 1,500 years ago in the far north of India.

What would be the practical implications of caring more about others than about yourself? This is the radical theme of this extraordinary set of instructions, a training manual composed in the fourteenth century by the Buddhist hermit Ngulchu Thogme, here explained in detail by one of the great Tibetan Buddhist masters of the twentieth century, Dilgo Khyentse. In the Mahayana tradition, those who have the courage to undertake the profound change of attitude required to develop true compassion are called bodhisattvas.

Based on a series of talks given by Chögyam Trungpa during the first session of what was to become Naropa University, Cynicism and Magic introduces key Tibetan Buddhist concepts, including karma, the structure of ego, the paramitas, and the bodhisattva. Employing a unique and intimate teaching style, Trungpa Rinpoche presents these concepts in a larger framework of questions we all have: What is authentic spirituality? Can I find enlightenment and freedom? How should I approach life, death, suffering, and boredom? How can I develop some discipline, patience, and sanity?

Buddhism offers a profound yet practical path to enlightenment. In this loving and generous book, the American-born and Tibetan-trained Lama Surya Das offers at once a definitive and nonsectarian guide to the wisdom found in ancient Tibetan teachings and a tried and true path of spiritual transformation. The radical and compelling message of Buddhism tells us that each of us has the wisdom, awareness, love, and power of the Buddha within; yet most of us are too often like sleeping Buddhas.

In his third book, Tantric philosopher and Oxford scholar Dr. Christopher Wallis calls out the seemingly helpful spiritual platitudes dominating our current culture and demonstrates how these "near-truths" can stand in the way of a more radically free and meaningful life—and ultimately, a deeper spiritual awakening. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, Wallis’s book uncovers why these oft-heard clichés are “near enemies of the truth" that can distract us from real spirituality, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Robert Thurman is brimming with energy and wit
As a serious Buddhist, I find Robert Thurman to be engaging, authentic and hilarious. In The Jewel Tree of Tibet he manages to make a rather huge chunk of Tibetan Buddhism easy to grasp and easy to digest.
If you are an intermediate to advanced practitioner, this is definitely one worth listening to.

Buddhism for magicians
He shows you the underlying principles and as someone who has practiced Western Magic and Tibetan Buddhism both for over almost a decade I can say I wish I had this sooner. But alas my groundwork had been laid for this to be immediately applicable and expand upon my earlier learning. Thank you, may all beings benefit!

Vital to my practice of Buddhism.
What did you love best about The Jewel Tree of Tibet?
I'm so thankful to have this precious audiobook once again in my ownership. The Jewel Tree of Tibet The Enlightenment Engine of Tibetan Buddhism by Robert Thurman is a vital tool in my cultivating calmness of mind and enriching my Buddhist beliefs and understandings. Once again I am so thankful to have this that I may listen and benefit from in my life.

Robert Thurman delivers
If you could sum up The Jewel Tree of Tibet in three words, what would they be?
Robert Thurman wins
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Jewel Tree of Tibet?
Robert's delivery, he really believes what he's communicating, and he really enjoys communicating it.
Which scene was your favorite?
Thurman's ornate descriptiveness
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's hard not to smile once and a while during a listening session. Yet, it's also hard to believe that starving children in some way deserve their fate because of karma-crimes in past lives, or that we need love Hitler as he may have once been our mother in a past life. Any and every religion is going to posit odd and disconcerting beliefs, however.
Any additional comments?
Robert Thurman has done a Ted Talk on the subject of Buddhism. It's short and is a great primer for this book. If you enjoy his Ted Talk, you should definitely pick up this book, you won't be disappointed.

hard to express
It seems trite but I find it hard to express the gratitude I feel for receiving this great teaching
from a truly great teacher. ROBERT Thurman makes the complex and esoteric clear as a bell
