About this listen
Brian Polk had been stateside for barely a year after leaving the air force when the unthinkable happened. It was an interstellar invasion - the beginning of the end of known civilization. First, military installations and the largest cities across the globe were turned to rubble. Tens of millions of souls lost during a horrific reign of terror. Government centers and law enforcement resources were next. Finally, the aliens eliminated humanity’s means to electronically communicate with each other.
The Earupitans' technology and weaponry was so remarkable, so advanced, humanity never really had a chance. The aliens now walk brazenly among humans - their reptilian eyes always watchful, always scrutinizing. No one is safe, and almost everyone who gets taken into an OEC center never sees the light of day again. Humanity now lives in fear - freedom is a thing of the past. And then there are those who have befriended the enemy.
But not Captain Brian Polk. He’s far more interested in taking back a little of what was stolen. When he acquires some of the alien technology, he finally has hope of making some small difference. He might even be able to pull off the impossible - that or he'll die trying.

Story
During the day, he’s a South Chicago high school janitor, slopping a mop around from nine o’clock to three o’clock, five days a week. At night, hiding out in a boarded-up factory, he attends to his damaged interstellar spacecraft, making repairs and counting the days until he can return to his homeworld of Calunoth. All he needs to do is mind his own business and avoid any messy human dramas for just a few more weeks. But it is on one of those quiet nights when he hears them outside: the MP140s. Named for a police radio code for murder, they're among the most ruthless killers.

Story
My name is Alphonse Malloy, and I see everything. From a simple glance, I know your hobbies, what you ate for breakfast, how well you slept, and whether or not your wife is secretly seeing the high school biology teacher when you're not around. I can't explain how or why I get these feelings, only that I know they're true. All the little secrets you're too afraid to tell. Sometimes, that means helping people. Other times, it means staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. I wish I could tell you I was using this ability for good.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Good, sci-fi story. Well worth the purchase.
I appreciate this standalone work. Often to get good sci-fi. You have to buy into a 13 book series. Not so here.

Excellent listen! Wish it was a series!
Good story, good narration! Well worth a credit! I only wish it had been a series, so there was time to give it more depth, but overall, it was a solid story, narrated well in a single book.

not all that original
this sort of reminds me of the TV show. V we're not completely similar, but there are parts that could be construed as the same.
if you can get this at a discount it's worth listening to. other than that I wouldn't spend a full credit for it.

The story moves at a good pace. Character development was also good. Some may think that the story line was to simplistic but it works if your looking just to be entertained.

Good, could have been better though
The concept was good, just could’ve been executed a little bit better I think. There were plenty of likable characters as well as unlikable, the story had a good premise only it seemed a little rushed. Also seemed as though that things fell into place a little too easily towards the end. If the author had drawn the story out over a handful of books it would have been a much more satisfying conclusion. The character development as well as the dramatic arc of the story could have been better accomplished if things have not been so rushed. It was just too bad, what could have been an excellent story was only allowed to be good.

Done with McGinnis
I've read a few of his books now, and all of them seem to have some common issues. They tend to be simplistic, with minimal character and world building. They tend to have underlying notes of casual, but not outright, misogyny and racism. They (at least the ones I've read) all follow a white guy on a damsel rescuing, shoot em up, "adventure".
if you want/like Michael Bay action stories from a Reagan years worldview, this author/book is for you.

A Bad Independence Day Knockoff
I enjoy most books by Mark Wayne McGinnis, and I absolutely loved the Scrapyard Ship series, but not this one. This was very much like a rehash of Independence Day with low IQ aliens utilizing low technology. I actually found nothing interesting in this book, and I did not care about any of the characters. Sad, I had hoped for more.
