About this listen

A fugitive child finds shelter with a monster of legend.

A mind-blind scholar outwits the mages who disdain him. A gold mage must secure a bank vault from a monster capable of obliterating entire cities. An aging basketweaver wakes up one morning to find a brand new river in front of her house. A palace-sized octopus seeks to defend his city from a living fortress of bone—if he can get his arms to cooperate.

In these twenty-four short stories set in the world of Mage Errant, John Bierce explores the murky depths of history, forgotten corners of Ithos and beyond, and the strangest reaches of magic itself.

Absolutely loved this!

Possibly the best anthology I’ve ever heard. Not only was it long enough to be worth the purchase, but each stories were fun, interesting, and expanded the lore or the world in unexpected ways. 10/10 would recommend.

A Grand Extension of a Fantastic World

After finishing Book 7 I was hungry for more, and this collection of short stories was a treasured addition to the world-building, bringing more detail and nuance to an already rich lore. I absolutely love the focus on science, economics and politics using this magical backdrop, and I can't wait for more content from John Bierce!

Good but not what I expected

I honestly still don't know what the Gorgon Incident is. Well I did enjoy all the short stories and learning more about his world and various new characters. I was more hoping for a whole book about the Gorgon Incident with Alustion as the main character or at least a good three to four hours. Instead we got a redacted file report. Still worth listening to just not what I expected or was hoping for.

The book version of anime "filler" for mage errant, don't skip!

More world building, introducing or including more backstory of existing characters, more lore and history! A great listen, highly recommend!

Enjoyable

In my opinion, I find that anthology books are something that listeners will like two or four of the stories and see the rest as somewhat disappointing. However, I believe readers will appreciate every story written in this book, and I hope people will purchase it because they won’t be disappointed.

I've listened to this nonstop for months

This has easily became my favorite series. There's something new every re-listen and I use it akin to binging a TV show. Just like you can rewatch and enjoy episodes you've seen 100 times, you still rewatch it 101th time for comfort or to pass the time when you can't think of anything else to watch.

I listen to these stories on my commute and all day at work. I don't know how I'd make it through my boring work day without them. There's so much detail but also ambiguity throughout this series. So many things connect and listening to this book in particular I've been able to connect it to mage errant series in many ways. It's interesting and entertaining to learn everything about the world as well as tie things back and trying to piece together up to a millennia of lore and mystery.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to make the most out of their purchase and really get into a series worth listening to. This is one of my new favorite authors and I'm planning on listening to everything they write.

As much as the writing is fun, it can't be understated how completely amazing the narration is for this series. It's as impeccable as it is amazing. I'm sure I would have listened to this with another narrator but I can't dispute that it takes this all to another level and no one else could match him in his performance.

Everything about this is outstanding. I just wish there were longer/more authors notes at the end of the books. They are fun and relaxing to listen to! Even listening to just a sample will get you hooked. Dont fret about the purchase prices. They go on sale sometimes and I've used my audible credits on every single book. But they are well worth it at any price. Please support this author and join the reddit page. We could use more fans to discuss and figure stuff out with!

Excellent Anthology of science-meets-fairytales!

Highly recommend for fans of Mage Errant main series! While there are world building details that might be confusing for people who haven't read the series, you would likely still follow along fine and the stories don't contain major spoilers for books further in the series. Only a couple main series characters appear and none of the primary protagonists do.

The short stories mostly focus on a diverse cast of characters who have a magical affinity for something unusual and/or who live through an an unusual event. The settings cover locales even more whimsical and fascinating than the main series and the stories generally have that mix of nerdy references to real world science and optimistic-but-not-naive morals on the nature of society and people (whether human, gorgon, giant octopus or otherwise) that Bierce does so well.

Contains violence and non-graphic references to intimacy. Diverse characters span across age, race, orientation and gender. Likely suitable for teenage readers.
