About this listen

50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION - WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA

Mario Puzo's classic saga of an American crime family that became a global phenomenon - nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read.

With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld.

A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched. A tale of family and society, law and order, obedience and rebellion, it reveals the dark passions of human nature played out against a backdrop of the American dream.

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Classic story is timeless

Great narrator and a timeless story make this an easy listen. My third or fourth Puzo book and an epic tale. I haven't seen any of the movies (other than cultural reference clips) so I wasn't too distracted by comparisons. It would've been interesting to see what Puzo would have made of life in 2019, both in Europe and here in the US.

Amazing

Having watched the classic movie, I was eager to read the book. While the movie did a great job bringing the book to life, there is no substitute for the depth and greatness of the book. I don't think I can give enough praise to this book. The story is deep and fulfilling. The performance of the reading really brings it to life in ways the movie can't. My only real complaint is some details are not necessary, such as Sonny's organ size and the whole story of the bridesmaids he screwed at the wedding. But that doesn't take away from the story at all. Pick this book up. It's a must.

Even if you have seen the movie

This is a really fun listen. I remember when it was published to an international Catholic ban.

Consistently Enjoyable!

This is a timeless classic. I love Joe Mantegna’s narration. His inflection, the way he defines each character is genius. He makes you feel in the moment and mentally see each major and minor male/female throughout the story.
I’ve had this audible for years, I never tire of hearing this story.

AMAZING

As good as the movie, if not better. The character development was divine. I was sad when I got to the end. Wasn't ready for that.

Timeless Classic

I absolutely love this book! I’ve listened to it several times and each time I notice something new. Take a chance, listen to this. If you do you may get hooked! The sequels are written too.
