About this listen

A MILESTONE IN HISTORICAL MYSTERY FICTION AS MAISIE DOBBS TAKES HER FINAL BOW

London, 1945: Four adolescent orphans with a dark wartime history are squatting in a vacant Belgravia mansion—the owners having fled London under heavy Luftwaffe bombing. Psychologist and Investigator Maisie Dobbs visits the mansion on behalf of the owners and discovers that a demobilized soldier, gravely ill and reeling from his experiences overseas, has taken shelter with the group.

Maisie’s quest to bring comfort to the youngsters and the ailing soldier brings to light a decades-old mystery concerning Maisie’s first husband, James Compton, who was killed while piloting an experimental fighter aircraft. As Maisie unravels the threads of her dead husband’s life, she is forced to examine her own painful past and question beliefs she has always accepted as true.

The award-winning Maisie Dobbs series has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers, audiences drawn to a woman who is of her time, yet familiar in ours—and who inspires with her resilience and capacity for endurance. This final assignment of her own choosing not only opens a new future for Maisie and her family, but serves as a fascinating portrayal of the challenges facing the people of Britain at the close of the Second World War.

What listeners say about The Comfort of Ghosts

Highly rated for:

The Story Aspect Of The Audiobook Is Praised For Its Intricately Interwoven Storylines, Compelling Mysteries, And Rich Historical Backdrop That Provides A Vivid Portrayal Of The World War Eras. Many Reviewers Appreciate The Satisfying Conclusion To The Long-running Series, With Poignant Character Arcs And A Sense Of Closure. However, Some Criticize The Repetitive Rehashing Of Past Events, Convoluted Subplots That Feel Unnecessary, Anticlimactic Resolution Of The Central Mystery, And Inconsistent Details Compared To Earlier Books. Despite These Negatives, The Overarching Themes Of The Impact Of War, Family Relationships, Personal Growth, Mystery Solving, And Historical Fiction Resonate Strongly With Listeners.

Goodbye old friend

This was a wonderful ending for a series I have loved from the beginning. Artful way to tie up all the ends. As usual the story and writing take immediate hold of you. I am going to miss Maisie Dobbs and waiting impatiently for the next book. Well done!

Much better than I expected

I was worried that the author might feel compelled to add one more “kick in the gut” piece of drama such as the early death of a major character. The central plot was a bit weak, but then, this was a real goodbye and we love you book for the characters and readers alike and that takes awhile. The narration was flawless as ever. I do need to go back to my books & double check a Maisie fact, but not a real historical one. I do have one question for the author who really did an amazing job with this series so I’m not complaining…but did I miss the story on what Pricilla’s niece is doing “now?” She’s the only character I was wondering about last night when I could not sleep! Again, thanks, Jacqueline!!

Great

This series is wonderful. I was so excited to have a new book come out! It was a perfect continuation of the story. I started sending my 85 year old aunt the series 6 months ago and she is thrilled with it. She reads them while I listen to them. I told her it makes me sad that she doesn’t get to hear the characters come alive with the incredible voices but she prefers reading them.

The history, how the people of the time came thru the devastation.

The Maizie Dobbs series was the best I have ever ‘read.’ The stories, characters and narrator are the best. I was totally drawn into the lives of of the characters and am sad that the series has ended.

The bes ending of all

I love this book. I like the way she bought Billy son back. I always suspected that Enid and James had a son or a daughter. the way you ended Maisie's story was the best. I am sad to see this story end. Normally I listen to audiobooks once but, this is the first time I ever listened to an audiobook twice.

Farewell, Maisie

I have absolutely loved all of the Maisie Dobbs series. This last one is such a fitting end. The way Winspear weaves the plot lines, history and psychology to tie together the arcs of the characters’ lives is thrilling. Thank you for such a rich series. I will miss Maisie.

Looking forward and leaving Marie

While I liked how pieces fit together, it seemed as though some of the pieces were forced into place. Too neat of a tie up actually. I am sorry that this will be the final book in the series as it would be great to see how the characters evolve after the war and during Englands reconstruction.

Great book ends an awesome series.

This is the last book in the Maisie Dobbs series. It is wonderful as is the whole series. I’m sorry to see it end.

I’ll be looking forward to whatever she writes next.

If you haven’t read this series, start with the first 1. They build on each other.

Parting is such sweet sorrow

The last novel and a series can be disappointing, but Jacqueline Winspear does it again! Great story, interesting tieups, and a fond farewell to Maisie Dobbs.
