About this listen
A psychological murder mystery set in Edwardian England during the early 1900s. "The Baron's Burden" transports readers to the crumbling manors and imposing estates of aristocratic England, where the veneer of noble life conceals dark secrets and complex intrigues.
When Old Lord Windsom unexpectedly inherits his family's decaying estate, he also inherits a legacy of debts and duties. His marriage to the ambitious actress Erin Carson, adds further complications, igniting a series of scandals that ripple through high society. As Erin Carson's schemes to secure her status unfold, a series of mysterious deaths—including that of her own sister—cast long shadows over the Windsom legacy.
The plot thickets when Lord Windsom himself meets a suspicious end, leaving behind a tangled web of secrets, deceit, and betrayal. The novel masterfully intertwines themes of obsession, loyalty, and the relentless search for truth. From the chilling discovery of a naked body in a modish flat to the calculated moves of cunning family members, the narrative peels back layers of deception, tracing characters' steps through corridors echoing with ancestral sins and unresolved mysteries.
Throughout the story, powerful characters such as the beleaguered barrister, Kenneth Billups, desperately puzzle over incongruent facts. Their incessant search for answers unfurls a haunting portrayal of human frailty, ambition, and desperation.
"The Baron's Burden" is an evocative journey through early 20th-century England, exploring the decline of old-world nobility amidst changing times. For fans of richly detailed English historical fiction and intricate murder mysteries, this novel offers a spellbinding read from the first page to the last.

Monotone voice and difficulty discerning between characters due to voice not changing
Story was amateur, unrealistic and at times hard to follow; reflecting it was AI generated. In chapter 5 a sentence totally unrelated is inserted, “Here’s a fresh take on your text channeling the spirit of Stephen King.” Audio shows Marshall Utley as author (Robert Marshall Utley was an author and American West historian deceased). Credits state Esther Tindall as author who is unsearchable except for one mention as an author of a book - no details about her; which confirms this story was AI generated.
