Luigi Artoni, the manager of a bank agency in the outskirts of Rome is found dead in a public garden not far from his office. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from a violent beating. The homicide squad, led by Inspector Sergio Cataldis, investigates this crime. One of those cases, devoid of witnesses and clues, in which it is essential to identify the motive that led to the crime in order to trace the perpetrators.
It turns out that the victim was not the immaculate man he might have seemed at first glance; he frequented an underground gambling den and he often availed himself of the services of a charming young woman of easy virtue. However these secret vices do not seem likely to justify the murder, therefore the investigation looks very difficult, until a strange sequence of violent incidents, involving people connected with Artoni, will enable the inspector to bring out the truth and identify the perpetrators of the crime.
