About this listen
A Tale of Fantasy and Magic
Rockwell believes his eight-year-old daughter Sydney has a very vivid imagination. She sees the mythical Fae: fairies, goblins, sprites, pixies, and other magical creatures. She sees them, talks about them, and plays with them, but every instance feels like a knife in Rockwell's gut. His daughter sees all the mythical creatures in the stories told to her by his late wife, Sarah, reminding him that Sarah is gone. These stories are folklore handed down through the generations and all that his daughter has to cling to of her mother. He has no idea how to help his daughter adjust to the loss of her mother, nor how to help her get past the illusion that fairy magic can bring her mother back to her.
To complicate things, Connie, a widow, catches his eye, and they find comfort in their loss by spending time with each other. For Rockwell and Connie, it’s a way to try to find a reason to look forward to tomorrow. However, it is a reason for Sydney to accelerate her plans and embark on a quest. She wants to discover the magic that will bring her mother home, and she’s putting herself at risk to do it. Rockwell doesn’t know what to do.
Except wonder why some of what Sydney knows she can’t possibly have learned from his wife.
