About this listen
Storytelling acts as a fantastic teaching tool that imparts life lessons to people of all ages. Storytelling has proved its durability and importance beyond any shadow of a doubt, beginning with the dawn of civilization and continuing in this era of almost immediate access to all knowledge. It has influenced our world in a number of ways, some of which are boringly simple to see and understand, and some of which remain more mysterious and enigmatic in meaning.
The value storytelling retains inspiration as a source and as a teaching method makes it possess the most important heritage of humanity. Storytelling is about tales. It's about using stories to reach the audience or clarifying something more - naturally, images, videos, and video help to tell a good story, too. Stories have also been a form of conveying. They'd tell each other stories before the people knew how to write.
It is much easier to recall the stories than plain details. Stories are also entertaining; they stimulate the imagination. That is why parents tell stories to their kids. And we enjoy watching movies and reading books. We enjoy the stories; we are story-addicted. Stories inspire and motivate. Stories are making us alive, and so are brands.
This brings brands back to earth as they are honest and genuine, which lets customers engage with them and the people behind them. Tapping into the feelings of people and highlighting the positive as well as the negative is how stories inspire and empower and ultimately push action.
In this audiobook, we will be looking at the following in details:
- Storytelling: aims and applications
- The 5Ws - when, where, what, who, why for good storytelling
- Ways to make your story interesting and believable
- The power of details
- Persuasion techniques
- Empathic communication
- Storytelling in everyday social life
- Business storytelling
Stories put people together in a world separated by a multitude of issues and build a sense of community. Notwithstanding our language, culture, political preferences, or ethnicity, stories bind us through how we feel and react to them. Stories make us human.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Story
It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

In Joel's Schwartzberg's 10-plus years as a strategic communications trainer, the biggest obstacle he's come across - one that connects directly to nervousness, stammering, rambling, and epic fail - is that most speakers and writers don't have a point. They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. This book shows you how to identify your point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points.

Telling stories is as old as language itself. Before humans learned how to write, the only way to communicate was through telling stories. In today's world, most of us regard ourselves as bad storytellers. What happened? Telling great stories is a skilled art. Leadership is the most challenging of human endeavors. It is often misunderstood. It can bewilder, mystify, and frustrate even the most dedicated practitioners. Leaders at all levels are often forced to use theoretical guesswork to make decisions and lead their troops. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. There are principles that can be applied and tenets that can be followed. There are skills that can be learned and maneuvers that can be practiced and executed. There are leadership strategies and tactics that have been tested and proven on the battlefield, in business, and in life.

Good but not enough instruction
The book is good. There is no doubting the value of storytelling. IMHO, Hall does a wonderful job highlighting the importance and nuances of storytelling but falls short on arming the reader with unique, insightful DIY instructions. My main concerns: 1. too much emphasis on ‘why storytelling.’ We already bought the (audio)book, no need to discuss that 2 hours in. 2. Not enough instruction. Hall admits she doesn’t like writing a How To chapter, and it shows. Much of the book is story examples instead of How To material. She tells stories about other great storytellers but never dissects their work.
