About this listen

Alone. Powerless. Human.

Tendira is a world of beastly shifters and deadly monsters…except me, the human queen.

When my home is taken over by an angry pack who wants me dead, I'm forced to run, so I go to the one place my attackers won't dare follow: the Blood Pack.

But the Blood Alpha watches his territory more closely than I imagined. His people catch me and drag me to their capital. Instead of killing me, they decide to keep me.

The problem? They have no idea who I am.

Now if I want to stay alive, I have to make the most ruthless pack in Tendira believe I'm one of them. That plan goes surprisingly well...until the Alpha decides he wants me as his mate.

I'm a human pretending to be a shifter, a queen pretending to be powerless, and a woman pretending not to fall in love with the deadliest shifter that's ever existed.

I'll die if I go back to my castle, but if the Blood Pack discovers my lies, I'll suffer a fate far worse than death. With my survival on the line, I can't afford to lose anything to the Blood Alpha—especially my heart.

I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this book. I loved it and stood in suspense waiting for the queen and her love to give in to each other. Downloading the next book immediately.

Nail biting storyline!

I enjoyed the book. In all honesty it was what I was looking for, a shifter mates romance that I could listen to easily that didn’t require too much thinking or attention to detail. There were a few things I could have done without, like how the main character spent way too much time thinking the same things over and over. How she just kept repeating the same inner thoughts every chapter in every situation. Like we get it, you wanna tell people your secrets but don’t trust them enough to do so. But she literally came up with a reason to mention that in every scenario. I did get annoyed with how she thought so little of the people she was growing to trust, when they clearly would not have acted the way she said they would if they knew her secrets. It was clear the main love interest would have been okay with anything she told him, but I kept telling myself she was a sheltered young girl who didn’t know better and was truly terrified for her life. So when you think of it that way, it makes sense how she is constantly worried about what would happen if this or that, and not fully trusting anyone.
Other than that, I liked the story. It kept me interested and made me want to see how the next book turns out, which is the goal, so mission accomplished!

Decent enough to make me want the next book

I was completely unprepared when I picked up this book, not expecting much, but it totally blew me away! It was even better than I could have imagined. I was literally kicking my feet in excitement! It's been a while since I've been so engrossed in a book. It stressed me out in the best possible way, and the ending was so unbelievably good that it left my jaw on the floor. I immediately bought the next two books 😂 I'm officially a huge fan of this author, and I can't wait to dive into more of her work!

Great start. There's complex world building here that manages not to confuse you. I kept thinking that this book had the same energy as an indigenous fable. The kind with sentient nature that tells its own story and has its own imperatives. This book also had the first heroine (Mesa, the weak human) I’ve ever read in the romance genre who manages to keep a massive (world altering) secret without being a trifling bitçh about it. Everyone kind of knows that something is ‘off’ with her, but they jump to deliciously wrong conclusions, and she doesn’t tell, AND no intimacy is lost to all the lies. In fact, Mesa’s lies (which really came down to self protection) combined with her ability to keep her eyes on the prize, make her an extremely strong heroine. This book also manages to achieve high romance (with Tuslan, the incredibly strong, notorious, beautiful, 5 form shifting alpha) without any sex… yet.

This book is all about the Desedra (or the mating games) which are open to all eligible men of all packs. The prize? Why, the shifter queen and all of her power. It's a centuries old (misogynist) tradition. Tuslan is also forced to participate even though he already has a deeper relationship with Mesa, because only the winner can be with her. This book isn't about playing the actual games though (which many reviews I read seemed angry about, I guess they wanted a bunch of strategic moves and murder?), it's more about the negative space SURROUNDING the games, ie. feasts, meet n greets, other dramalama. Of course there are fights and plots of anarchy, but the bloody battles inside the games are all hearsay to us. The best parts of this book for me were all the found family bonds. I also liked how Mesa stepped into her strong public role. As well as her new awareness of who deserved her time and love, and who didn't. Cliffhanger ending. A lot of sexual tension/3rd base, but no intercourse.

“Because some books are just better when you don’t read all the words” - Mesa, chapter 15

Truer words were never spoken. Skip skip skip. This book was just full of garbage scenes at the golden pavilion. Which were made worse because they followed a painful start, where all of the secondary characters were gone (by necessity). But the author drew it out unnecessarily for HOURS, and it was bruuuuuuuuuuutal. Plot wise I just wanted the gang back together, and a little window into the couple's new political normal ruling Blood pack. But there was very little of that. Tuslan does eventually show up, but this book was the Mesa show. I got really tired of hearing how he hunted, carried, bathed her, and flew her around like a Boeing (after she LITERALLY did a magic hack - like god - to re-establish HIS VERY EXISTENCE). It felt weird??? To see Tuslan go from indomitable alpha to sad marionette in 3 books. Idk why SO MANY PNRs eventually abandon plot in favour of ‘queen treatment’. My sexual identity isn’t so fragile that I need every character to become a serf to the massive feminine ego. The second half of this book does pick up a tiny bit, but by that point I was already majorly butthurt 😭. There are some side plots about embracing Mother Nature's magic aka Tendira's (the shifter world's) magic, and rescuing the first Shifter Queen (yeah yeah, I am woman hear me roar) 🙄. Even though the writing was fine, I felt this book lost its way in the ROMANCE department. Yes, the MCs were always together, but sooooooo focused on Mesa, her power, and her womanhood. The sex here felt more like magical experimentation than carnal desire— after hanging in there for two and a half books all I wanted was needy sweaty thrusty HUMAN sex. I was also kinda offended on behalf of humans, since it was made clear in this book that humanity just wasn't enough (so much for unconditional love).

Narration was great.

This book is like the written equivalent of sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for that moment the roller coaster will plummet and you'll have an amazing ride... but not knowing when the actual plummet will come. But in the most enjoyable way!

suspenseful and steamy

Really liked this book. I love the concept of different shifter forms in one person. The Female Lead isn’t a weak one. And the male lead is a strong beast. Enjoyed this read!

I really enjoyed this story! The author spent time developing the female lead, her relationships with the other characters and the male lead. I appreciated the courtship bits which makes it more of a romance than other shifter books that are supposed to be paranormal romance but just rely on “mates” to make the characters fall in love. And there’s all kinds of story left to explore in the next book! Can’t wait!

So good

I honestly just figured this was another silly romantasy that I'd get as part of a twofor and quickly forget about. But this was seriously GOOD. I couldn't put it down. I immediately purchased the 2nd book.

Better than I expected!

I’ve skipped over this book so many times. I’m so glad I finally decided to give it a try last night. I enjoyed this book immensely on to book 2.
