 When Matt Gates rode into the small town of Dry Creek, nestled in the shadow of the great Sangre de Cristo Mountains, he had no idea he was riding into the middle of a bitter feud between the area ranchers and a handful of homesteaders who had claimed possession of prime acreage the ranchers thought they were entitled to. One rancher in particular, Captain Vernon Piersol, was strongly motivated to drive the group of farmers out of the Wet Mountain Valley.
