ROME, 210 BCE. The Roman Republic is on the cusp of a second war with the Carthaginian empire. In the midst of this conflict, three men arise to change the course of western history: Cato the Elder, Hannibal the Great, and Scipio Africanus.

Born into a wealthy military family, Publius Cornelius Scipio is a young scholar who dreams of teaching Rome's commoners. But Scipio has promised his father that he will defend Rome against Hannibal the Great and his two brothers.

When Rome's commanders refuse to confront Hannibal, Scipio steps forward to become Rome's youngest general. But Scipio soon finds himself fighting on two fronts: in Italia against the Carthaginians and in Rome against Cato the Elder's austerity party. Denied the troops and resources he so grievously needs, Scipio sets out with an outnumbered army of raw recruits, relying on his genius to even the odds.
