A dying man is murdered. A rich man's wife agrees to pay $3,000 for the return of a stolen box of rocks.

A series of odd, inexplicable events is haunting Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police and drawing him alone into the Bad Country of the merciless Southwest, where nothing good can survive...including Chee. Because an assassin waits for him there, protecting a 30-year-old vision that greed has sired and blood has nourished. And only one man will walk away.

But what happened to Leaphorn? Why the change to Chee? Story's still good, though.

Great continuation of Hillerman's series

Superb storytelling with an unusual cultural bent, in this case that of the Indians of the Southwest. Terrific narration keeps you fully engaged. Can't wait to listen to more of this series.

Great Story

For fans of detective stories, Tony Hillerman is a good listen. Intertwining the American Indian history, customs and beliefs make the stories excellent. It does not take long to become familiar and feel that you know Leaphorn & Chee characters.

I really enjoy this series so far. Thia is the 4th book, number 3 is not available on Audible, which is curious and disappointing. My only complaint: why does Chee run around without a handgun, when, first of all, he is a police officer and has the right to carry a weapon, but secondly, he knows there is a mad man out there hunting him? It's making me crazy. Seriously? Why does the author write such stupidity into his characters? 🤦🏻

George is the best!

The beautiful southwest; beautiful and dangerous

Jim Chee, Navajo policeman assembles three disparate clues into a final ending that blow your sox off. Brilliant police work, exciting characters and a dash of New Mexico Navajo culture tossed in. Engrossing and interesting, well paced. Chee is on the cusp of a life decision, which does not get made in this book...maybe next time?

Enjoyed not only the unfolding mystery but also the details of the Navajo culture. Enjoyed listening to Guidall as a younger narrator. He's my favorite!
